If your pull request description has bullet points, chances are each bullet point deserves a separate PR

@didgebaba I just read about an indigenous nation in Brasil that sings a song that describes and names 33 types of native bees which are now being classified.

Watching people on the 'tech-in-school' list I'm lurking on fretting migrating away from one proprietary dependence (VMWare) to another (Proxmox VE) talking about license costs going from $700/yr to $5800/yr. Why don't these people see that they're just perpetuating their unhealthy dependence on profit-motivated badness. They don't seem to have much technical confidence.

Good news everyone! Geoclue 2.7.2 is out.
Now for the bad news: Although alternatives exist, the shutdown of Mozilla Location Services (#MLS) basically crippled #Geoclue for devices without a GPS.
Help is on the way though, code for a GeoIP location source is being developed, and it should make it easy to add different providers. Please see the MR here:
gitlab.freedesktop.org/geoclue
Testing, comments, patches and suggestions for GeoIP providers are welcome!

@fnetX perhaps join @iftas and speak to @jaz .

While there's focus on fediverse moderation, it's got a good resource library.

You could also speak to @thenexusofprivacy .

Are there resources (e.g. blog articles, documentation) on how to build good moderation features in software?

Looking for some inspiration for #Forgejo and #Codeberg.

I appreciate any pointers.

I have a Cutco brand ice cream scoop that's a couple decades old, and the plastic handle is slowly turning into disgusting goop. Cutco has a "forever" guarantee of replacement or repair, but I'm dithering over the most ethical course of action from here.

Thoughts?

August–September 2024 Development Update

We have spent the time since the last update on infrastructure tasks and smaller features.

Most importantly, we have configured Codeberg Translate, the Codeberg’s (@Codeberg) instance of Weblate, for Topola. This provides an easy way to translate Topola without having to know how to use advanced software such as Git.

We invite you to translate Topola to your language too!

‘A 100-year vision’: #Skiddaw’s barren peak to spring to life in ambitious #rewilding - theguardian.com/uk-news/articl "More than 1,200 hectares of Cumbrian forest will be transformed into England’s highest nature reserve" fab news; now do the rest of the #LakeDistrict

I just discovered #brouter .
It's a routing engine that can use #openstreetmap data and your own preferences for #cycling roads if you want.

Certainly beats #graphhopper on the #OSM website.

Is there a GUI for #Linux ?

Powerpoint suggests alt text now when I make slides for class, which is great! Like for this image: "A police officer helping a person with a dog"

"We are disappointed in today’s opinion about the Internet Archive’s digital lending of books that are available electronically elsewhere. We are reviewing the court’s opinion and will continue to defend the rights of libraries to own, lend, and preserve books." - blog.archive.org/2024/09/04/in bad news

🧵 As many as 90% of government secrets shouldn’t be secret in the first place.

A good, new bipartisan bill hopes to fix this — but it’s missing a key ingredient.

I'm currently in a thread where someone put forward the idea that the term "AI" should only be used when and if we ever develop machines that "approach personhood."

Granted that some people also argue for broadening the definition of "personhood," I just want to state for the record that I think that humans are far from the only organisms with intelligence.

I wrote a piece for Truthout on how the worker strike at #Cornell is a symptom of tax-exempt #HigherEd institutions driving the conditions that displace locals.

It gets into how student demands for divestment (from weapons industries tied to the genocide in Gaza) and transparency about endowment restrictions could lead to greater scrutiny of nonprofit university spending.
