@paulcox Yes. Because racism is a lie that's much easier to maintain with a little distance. There were at least some Alabama players whose first sustained exposure to a real life Black person was on that team. At least a few of them became less racist as a result of those encounters.

In general, having close Black coworkers does a lot to reduce racism.

Which is part of why there is *less* anti-Black sentiment among working class white folks, than wealthy white folks.🙂🙃

New: We published body camera footage of a sheriff in Idaho hunting for 'obscene' books at the library to use for a political stunt last year in which he announced he was holding two stolen books hostage at a public meeting.

Those books were actually stolen from another library. The sheriff returned them mutilated, and they have not been returned to circulation

On February 25, we received an email from a person who signed himself Aaron Bushnell, announcing that he was going to engage in an act of protest against the genocide of the Palestinian people.

Shortly afterwards, Aaron set himself on fire in front of the Israeli embassy in Washington, DC.

All afternoon, while other journalists were breaking the news, we discussed how we should speak about this. Some subjects are too complex to address in a hasty social media post.

Here, we share some of our thoughts about tragedy, urgency, and sacrifice.

I can find only one major journalism organization -- the Guardian US -- that a) understands the accelerating threats to our democracy; b) relentlessly explains what is happening; and c) has proudly assumed the role of an advocate for saving democracy.

I'm fairly sure that other Big Journalism orgs understand. A (scant) few have even begun to give this the ongoing coverage it requires.

But apart from the Guardian, they can't be bothered to become the advocates we desperately need.

Hypothesis: Even if social media are only toxic as a result of capitalist-based engagement-maximizing interfaces, that doesn't necessarily mean that free and open interfaces that mimic the corporate experience won't also be toxic.

Imagine a world where you work three or four days a week. In your free time, you play sports, spend time with loved ones, garden, and engage with local politics.

Overnight shipping, advertising, and private jets no longer exist, but health care, education, and clean electricity are free and available to all.

you own the data on your electric meter.
Until only a few years ago, inexpensive recording meter readers were available (e.g., black & decker EM100B). Non-hard-wired meter readers are no longer commercially available. But there’s an easy, low-cost, scalable hack to get your data. Your data is worth money, & others profit from your data.
That might be why they discontinued meter readers. We are piloting a ratepayer collective where we get/wield our own data, in concerted fashion.
