Data Grab: Big Tech colonialism

Just as nations stole territories for ill-gotten minerals and crops, wealth, and dominance, tech companies steal personal data important to our lives. It’s only within the framework of colonialism that we can comprehend the full scope of this heist.

Like the land grabs of the past, today’s data grab converts our data into raw material for the generation of corporate profit against our own interests.

Wow, just found disks containing the first (and only) season of Firefly. It's been years since I watched this great -- and far too short-lived -- story.

“When HIPAA was designed, nobody really anticipated what the world was going to look like," EFF’s Lee Tien told @engadget — lawmakers couldn't have anticipated how much data we would be sharing about ourselves online. engadget.com/hipaa-protects-he

Today is a book birthday.

Yes, I know it's cheesy.

I sent out birth announcements for my first book in 2001 and I've been doing birth announcement for each one since.

I published an excerpt of this book on my blog last year. It's here: terikanefield.com/the-power-of
(An excerpt of the text, of course. The illustrations are Pat Dorian's)

"[T]here is no other area of life in which the person supplying weapons that he knows will be used to commit mass violence would be taken seriously if his buddies told reporters that he was privately unhappy about the whole thing. Only American foreign policy gets that kind of pass."

Every person with a grasp on reality can see that #GenocideJoe is a weak, spineless leader with no moral compass.

Oh hey, the Attorney General of Indiana has published a snitch line for schools who teach LGBTQ+ issues, or make Woke materials available to their students!

Here’s the URL. Use it responsibly. Don’t use it to report Godzilla flying the Trans flag or anything like that, ok?

1 reason why #Trump's comments about abandoning #NATO matter are, 1st & foremost, bc he ordered GOP to abandon #Ukraine which virtually all near-Ukraine allies think makes them next

He is, in front of our faces, delivering Ukraine up to Putin as a gift.

But the other reason it matters is bc we SAW this call-and-response in '16 & '20, when Trump got help from Russian spies

This is more of same. Stop letting Trump play dumb. Stop playing dumb yourself. emptywheel.net/2024/02/12/call

Proprietary software like Windows is fundamentally insecure not because of Microsoft's privacy policies but because its code is hidden from the very users whose interests it is supposed to secure. A lock on your own house to which you do not have the master key is not a security system, it is a jail. John Sullivan u.fsf.org/py

Talking Points Memo, which has been running much of the best political coverage of America's descent into dictatorship, just published an extraordinary start to a must-read series called "The Legal Coup"

Trump's apparatchiks sought "endless chaos in Congress" to persuade Supreme Court to install Trump as president despite Biden's actual -- and substantial" victory.

If you live in the Bay Area, or are interested in what is happening there, click through all the links in @jwz's excellent blog roundup of journalism about the way kleptocratic tech plutocrats are trying to buy the San Francisco government. jwz.org/blog/2024/02/just-got-

SF has real problems, and the city's government is often horrible in its inepness. But the selfish wealth crew will unquestionably (IMO) make things worse if they pull this off.

And they might well get away with it.

Just putting this out here: I've been working on #Forgejo for #Codeberg for the past couple of months, and am loving it. So much so, that I would like to do more of it, more than what Codeberg can pay me for.

So if anyone wishes to sponsor me (or knows any company or organization who might), to implement a particular feature, or fix something, or in general help them with anything Forgejo related, I'm available, please get in touch!

For reference, my work has been described as:

Long-standing issues are now finally resolved, and the progress feels like a rocket booster.

This is based on my the first two months of my work. I started out with only vague knowledge of Go and Forgejo. Imagine what I can do now that I'm much more familiar with both.

Anyhow, more information about my Forgejo-related work, and links to my resume, and other useful bits of information are available here.

Boosts appreciated!

Very interesting piece from @interfluidity on how ascendant neoliberalism ("expanding the scope of market logics in regulating human affairs, even into spheres that were traditionally the province of other institutions") is an overlooked cause of the demographic transition to low birth rates.
