Weather tracker: Saudi Arabia hit by floods as temperature records broken in Canada - theguardian.com/environment/20 "Heavy rain and hailstorms affect large parts of Gulf state while temperatures in some parts of Canada could be 20C above normal" and so it begins in 2024

One of the things I am learning from this Frederick Douglass biography is that there wasn’t just one “abolitionist movement” before the Civil War, there were multiple abolitionist movements, and there were a lot of ideological and personal squabbles within and between them.

Which is totally unsurprising when you consider the state of contemporary progressive and leftist movements.

Distributed Denial of Secrets or #DDoSecrets is a vital publisher archiving leaks, for the public. We have been active for five years, but donations have never kept up with the pace of our submissions. We have shared hundreds of terabytes of leaks with journalists and researchers. We are now launching an urgent appeal: donorbox.org/ddosecrets-five-y Without your donations, we may be forced to pause operations and suspend access to our search engines and direct download tools. Can you pitch it to help us meet our goal?

US politics is a disaster, a tragedy, a black comedy

Friend and fellow community techie @FreeScholar was in a rad punk / new wave band called The Phantoms.

Here's a great write up of her contribution to the 70s and 80s punk scene and how that inspired her to become a free software activist.

IMHO: #Mozilla is repeating the #OpenAI process. A growing conflict between community driven/focused products and greedy managers thinking more VC (Venture Capital) style as they become more and more decoupled from the humble origins. This conflict will explode (I mean — asking for donations while the managers take home millions has a weird smell to it) soon and money will win (again). It's really a shame in this case.

We brought the noise to hundreds of events in 2023, from book festivals, conferences, and radical book fairs to punk fests and shows, activist gatherings, and comic fairs. Thanks very much for supporting our work and independent publishing at these events and beyond.

This is a bad path to go down, imo. Incommensurable values exist. You cannot simply reduce all values to dollars and think that you have somehow accounted for them. An unpolluted stream; a human life; time spent with loved ones -- these are not things which you can properly account for by putting a dollar value on them. To the contrary, putting a dollar value on these things denies their *actual* value, and so serves only to devalue them.

USB C fanboys making false claims again…

No, USB C is not "universal"

- There are litterally multiples charging protocols for each device brand, which are not necessarily retrocompatibles for a same brand. And there no compatibility between different brands. Only devices/chargers that use Qualcomm' QuickCharge (Qualcomm chipsets only but far from all Qualcomm based devices, as most use device's brand's protocol instead), or USB-PD are "interoperable" in terns of "fast charge".

They should ALL face the consequences personally.

#Brexit was created to shield the likes of Smogg & Sunak from the prying eyes of Europe's tax inspectors who were looking into businesses & individuals who made their money in Europe, but from countries registered in tax havens, meaning they paid little to no tax.

When the #Tories said "We want our country back", the "We" wasn't you & me the electorate, it was "Them", the Eton/Oxford elite who believe they were born to rule over us.
