...authors and realized it had the same feel as things that had come before like UML. A bunch of methodologists with a product to sell looking to team up to increase profits by selling to developers who were of a "code is king!" mindset.
When you can't prove or disprove any processes, then it's easy to get people to buy into new ones.
Maybe someday software development will become science, based on measurement, but until then we'll just be suckers for that next silver bullet.
#DumbAllOver
It's kind of funny how the Agile Manifesto launched a whole cottage industry seemingly with the goal to punish software developers with some trite phrases that all said the same thing, "trust your people".
That basic message of course appealed to a lot of software developers, who could only dream of having real autonomy, but they should have recognized the lack of supporting evidence, room for broad interpretation, and the process dollars to be made.
The look of the composition of the...
Every year, Americans spend billions on #TaxPrep services, paying a heavily concentrated industry of giant, wildly profitable firms to send the #IRS information it already has. Despite the fact that most other rich countries have a far more efficient process, many Americans believe that adopting this process here is either impossible, immoral, or both.

This post from @rbreich (see screenshot) is a classic example of why we should stop using "earned" to describe "collected" or "made" in the context of income.
The word "earn" includes a value judgment -- that the money is deserved.
Little of vast loot being collected by the 0.1% is even remotely earned.
If I ran a journalism org, our policy would be to use neutral, not loaded, language in this and many other cases.
@jayrosen_nyu
You and I have been arguing this forever. Why, oh why have journalists and news organizations been so reluctant to (1) cover Fox as the malign political actor it is and (2) shun it by, e.g., refusing their people membership in professional organizations. The call about the end of journalistic integrity is coming from inside the house.
Useful write-up about #California bill AB 2273, yet another piece of legislation that claims to be about protecting children but that in fact harms online civil liberties by promoting censorship and requiring websites to practice surveillance on users:

In 1979 Jimmy Carter installed solar panels on the White House roof. In the 80s' Ronald Reagan removed them.
Carter wanted renewables to generate 20% of U.S. energy needs by 2000. When Reagan was elected he scrapped the policy, eliminating tax breaks for renewable technologies in favour of oil and gas. Today the US produces just 7% of its energy from renewables, the majority from hydroelectric schemes.
A massive wasted opportunity which we and future generations will pay for.

I have a Facebook account that has been cloned many times. Reporting it (usually because someone else found it and let me know) does usually lead to FB taking down the offending accounts.
Now the company wants me to fork over $144 per year to have a "verified" account that, as far as I can tell, won't stop the clones.
Not the Onion.
Texas, where people with handgun licenses are allowed to concealed carry on college campuses (https://guides.sll.texas.gov/gun-laws/schools-colleges) is also the state where a state house representative introduced a bill on February 16 to prohibit polling places at higher education campuses "in the best interests of safety" because "There’s a lot of opportunity there for people to be places they shouldn’t be."

These "top 10 candidates for 2024" lists keep coming out every few months. They're incredibly embarrassing for political journalists, who seem to be intent on willfully ignoring all of the lessons of the 2020 Democratic primary (👇) & deeply committed to again erasing black voters from the party.
Pete Buttigieg at #2? 🤷♂️
The rest is silly, too. Warnock/ Booker not even ranked. Polis/Newsom over Whitmer/Shapiro/Pritzker. Etc. It's like actual US politics doesn't exist.

Today is the Day of Remembrance for the Japanese American community. 81 years ago today, when I was just a boy of four, FDR signed Executive Order 9066, setting in motion the evacuation of people of Japanese descent from the West Coast and our long years of internment inside ten barbed wire prison camps.
We must never let such a thing happen again in America, and and we must strive everywhere to prevent the forced relocation and mass incarceration of innocent people. #NeverForget #NeverAgain
Made an infographic about how VISA started and operated as a #coop for most of it's history. The founder Dee Hock envisioned expanding the membership to cardholders and merchants, not just banks.
This would have made it the largest coop the world had ever seen; with over 2 billion members, it's membership would have been almost twice as large as all other #coops in the world combined!
