Realization: the main utility of blockchain tech is that it presents an irrefutable argument for a wealth tax. If there’s enough bored money rattling around out there to fund obviously negative-sum nonsense like this, we can as a society choose to spend that money on public education, health care and clean running water instead.

A part of a new blog article I am writing about open source and the cooperative movement.

Let me know if you have some thoughts or links relevant about the topic!

This makes me very angry: rnz.co.nz/news/national/474816 another example foreign corporations running roughshod over foreign lands and regulation and not taking responsibility for the horrible mess they've created.

I will be livid if either a single cent of taxpayer money is spent to clean this up completely - it's on Rio Tinto, as majority owner and majority profiteer, or if they get away with anything less than a complete clean up.

What would you give up to defend ?

Would any capitalists reply to that with an answer other than, "nothing"? Probably not.

Would any in the armed services be all gung-ho about defending capitalism rather than freedom (which is really what they are doing)?

TechRights is reporting that Mozilla is hiring managers from the CIA. Firefox is looking sketchier. I think I'll move toward Gnu IceCat more. TechRights was stating they moved to LibreWolf, which I haven't tried. I also use Gnome Web some. Once I get rid of my Android phone, when my Librem 5 arrives, I'll probably settle into one main browser. Of course outside factors will impose their own requirements. e.g., financial and medical software needs.

Longer, hotter and more frequent heat waves in cities

Cities will likely not enact changes in time to regulate heat better, especially for the poorer citizens.

Australia elected a Labor PM in 1972 and briefly became independent, abolishing royal patronage and expressing solidarity with non-aligned countries.

Then MI6, the CIA, Nixon and the queen used "coupmasters" who previously worked on the coup against Indonesia's anti-colonial president Sukarno AND Chile's socialist leader Salvador Allende to trigger a "constitutional crisis" in Australia and simply fired the PM using "reserve powers."

They're figureheads until they're not

Many people from Commonwealth nations don’t view the monarchy or a particular monarch the way I do. I think we were encouraged to think of her as a benign ruler with little real power. But she acted powerfully behind the scenes, e.g. in the removal of a democratically elected prime minister here in the ‘70s. Even if we assume she was a benign ruler, the system (not this one individual) highlights the lack of democracy and the extreme inequality inherent in a hereditary, unelected head of state.

After having a frustrating conversation with a friend about how the Internet has turned from an exciting new technology to something saddening that's endlessly abused capitalism, I decided to contribute my tiny share to make alternative digital spaces possible.

This is how datenkommune.org came to be. It's a public access computer system, powered by OpenBSD and with a focus on a positive computing experience and driven by a desire to learn, cooperate and enjoy technology without any commercial motives or the dystopian intrusion of surveillance capitalism.

I eventually plan on writing down more what the philosophy behind it is, and what differentiates the project from (e.g.) the Tildeverse (which it is partially inspired by), but for now you can read about it at datenkommune.org/philosophy.ht.

If you're interested in more details and in gaining access, look no further: datenkommune.org/service.html

Everything is still in its infancy, but it should be ready for a first couple of users. So if you're interested .. I'd be happy to see you around. Feel free to spread the word. :)
