Glad China is helping Russia out with weapons, so the Russian people don't have to start calling "Chinese Food", "Freedom Food".

That's what you do when an ally refuse to help in your illegal wars, right? ...or is that just ?

Took a sick day from work, because I'm feeling under the weather and was wishing all day yesterday that I had stayed home. I'm finding myself at the computer doing some home stuff and some unfunded open source work, and I'm not feeling guilty about it; I know I can hop back into bed if I start feeling tired out.

Then it hit me...if I was working from home would I have even taken a sick day? Could working from home be an even more insidious whip to our backs than moving to unlabeled time off?

For those thinking that chapter 5 is about the same old carbon footprint we've heard for years, Amy Westervelt breaks down here how the research is much more systemic and powerful.

Remember Twitter's super uber-secret project Bluesky? They finally explained what they're up to, and it's spicy 🌶️

So spicy that I had to write a 1,200 blog post one what exactly it entails. Key learning: Twitter doesn't like Mastodon. 🧵 blog.peerverse.space/lets-talk

Just set up a new Wekan production system (via Docker Compose) in a very short space of time. Nice. It's come a LONG way since I last ran one. If you're not familiar with it: github.com/wekan/wekan

Much of the US is completely, fundamentally broken. rnz.co.nz/news/world/464755/ok Many states seem committed to making the US' world's richest 3rd world country.

The Kids Online Safety Act would require platforms to create systems for parents to spy on—and control—the conversations young people are able to have online, turned on by default. Tell the Senate to vote no on this bill. act.eff.org/action/tell-the-se

Gag orders can silence companies that receive government data requests for any period that a court deems appropriate—even indefinitely, sometimes with no fixed end date at all. This is a problem, and we’re glad Congress is trying to fix it. eff.org/deeplinks/2022/04/ndo-

Today is #AntitrustDay: Nonprofits, tech companies, and users are uniting in calling on Congress to encourage competition in tech. We can’t restructure our relationship with tech until we have antitrust laws that give us choices. Contact lawmakers now. eff.org/deeplinks/2022/04/day-

The fire is spreading.... two banks, one in Philly and another in Minneapolis, were attacked in solidarity with people defending the Atlanta Forest against those who seek to turn woodlands into a cop playground and movie studio. Both of the banks attacked are funders of the police association trying to build the dystopian facility dubbed Cop City.

Want to join the fight? Head to Atlanta May 8-15 for a week of action, or take action where you're at!

Under Biden, Private Detention Isn’t Ending—It’s Changing Form
The Biden administration promised to end private prisons. Instead, it has allowed them to be converted into immigration detention facilities.

This on top of Biden's EPA not going to regulate perchlorate in drinking water and the US Transportation Dept decision not to require safety valves on older pipelines shows is alive and well with the establishment Democrats.

Interesting problem:
It is possible to automatically cross-post from Twitter to Mastodon and vice versa.
But, the standards and culture of Twitter are very different from those of many Mastodon instances (like Social.Coop, which has a clear code of conduct). Is it better for Twitter users to cross-post on Mastodon manually, choosing which tweets will fit the culture and standards of the instance? If not, should their accounts be labeled "bot" accounts?

It's nice to see so many things in life you could make better; it sucks to know that no one will ever pay you to make things better.

Do you think there'll be a The Southman movie featuring an indigenous ancestor of Africa, South America, or Australia? ... Me neither, but it could probably be just as grand (maybe even the same story).

Speaking of hypocrisy...a bunch of conservatives at a company I used to work for are looking for a government handout to restore the pension income they lost when the company declared the pension bankrupt. Of course, these guys are blaming the government, not the company management that borrowed against the pension to elevate their bonuses or the Reagan administration that made it possible for companies to borrow against the employees' pension funds. PBGC was already a bailout.

White hypocrisy includes many liberals in the USA. Still...it's nice to see this from a mainstream media outlet.

Colleague at work trying to tell me that the chat status indicator is sacrosanct. My response was to throw a copy of Peopleware (DeMarco and Lister) at his head.

I only allow the chat app to run, because some people don't seem to know how to use email anymore. I disable notifications, because I'm supposed to be working.
