economics beefs

Wow - fascinating. In the generally totally munted US political scene, this info drops: invidious.snopyta.org/watch?v= - US voting districts which favoured Republicans (i.e. Trumpists) last election, the rates of vaccination are substantially lower (like 40% lower). Their COVID contraction and *death* rates are also *much* higher. In tightly contested races, the Republicans have lost the natural selection race, and will likely lose the election race. Too bad, but just desserts.

Ugh. It's always ominous when you see one of your SaaS providers being acquired by someone else. The results are almost never good. In this case, Mailjet... I hope it's not 'dilution of value, here we come". Capitalism sucks.

Everyone deserves #privacy. The United Nations even codified it as a human right in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948.

However, governments, corporations, and other powerful entities routinely block us from exercising our right to privacy through #surveillance, monitoring, and tracking.

Shell is trying hard to greenwash fossil gas as a "clean" fuel. But the reality is a dirty one: In Vaca Muerta, Argentina, @Shell is constructing a new gas field, which is being linked to numerous violations of indigenous and human rights and environmental destruction. #MoveShell

Security companies sometimes use "we're in Switzerland" to imply that makes them more secure or private. But better protection from government compulsion doesn't do much good if the company itself decides to collect and sell your location data. bloomberg.com/news/articles/20

"Conventionally, liberal theory conceived creativity as the capacity of the individual exercised in isolation by an unusually gifted person, the (white male) genius (Woodmansee, 1984). Many cultural tropes, from the writer struggling with the empty page, to the artist secluded in her atelier, and the inventor with his personal “eureka” moment, reflect and popularise this notion."

Long ago, back in 1996, the entire Internet (there weren't so many of us back then) turned our pages black and protested a hostile government takeover attempt.

One of our poets wrote this manifesto, "A Declaration of the independence of Cyberspace". Take a listen if you haven't heard, or haven't lately.

Of course Elsevier's "enhanced pdf viewer" tracks where you click, view, if you hide the page, etc. and then transmits a big base64 blob of events along with ID from University proxy when you leave. I'm sure straight to SciVal for sale.
Is this the way we want science to work?

This one goes out to all my feminist friends who fell for the manufactured Bernie Bros narrative and helped the neoliberal Democrats keep power in the party.
