Stumbled across the "Clean Network" initiative this morning. Sounds like a threat to freedom.

Had someone state that you don't want a problem the Friday afternoon before a release. I was about to reply that is true for any Friday afternoon, but then remembered Gerald Weinberg's statement of crisis, "It may look like a crisis, but it's only the end of an illusion."

This is so true in software development, especially when you don't use good metrics like function points. The illusion is the schedule, which often has little basis in known values.

Hey, it turns out that it is in fact possible for values-driven companies to stop participating in practices that are known to cause people harm, even when it may impact revenue.

The Rise of Netflix Competitors Has Pushed Consumers Back Toward Piracy - Karl Bode @ VICE (2018): vice.com/en/article/d3q45v/bit

Gives me some hope that if people have to give up "must see" movies/TV anyways (or resort to piracy), that gives free culture an opportunity to get a foothold...

Microsoft must really be trying to increase usage numbers for LinkedIn Learning, because the company I'm working at has tied both goals and bonus to employees using a certain number of hours of LinkedIn Learning.

Both the goal and the bonus amount are pretty insulting, especially to someone late in career. Learning really is its own reward, if it's something you need or want to learn, so providing access to *good* learning is good. LinkedIn Learning isn't good learning.

Your power company wants you to financially help them provide power to people who can't pay their utility bills in deadly weather conditions. Why? So they don't have to cut into their own profits.

Flow is important to characterize, but it is also to understand what conditions cause one to enter and exit flow. This is especially important in knowledge work. Peopleware by DeMarco and Lister cited studies on interruptions to flow and the cost of reattaining it. Newer studies would be beneficial to understanding productivity in knowledge work.
