I despair at listening to RNZ's coverage of the Waikato hospital ransomware attack... I suspect that the wrong conclusions are being drawn from advice taken from people with vested interests in foreign corporate businesses. It's only going to get worse from here.

The problem is serious, but it's not about the amount of money being spent (as suggested by the pundits), but rather broad ignorance among the *pros* who've been entrusted with managing these networks. Education, not $, is the issue.

Read: Governing the Information Commons.

Nice article about building governance layers into platforms. Following Elinor Ostrom’s 8 principles for managing a commons. The part that resonated most for me on first reading is the need to understand the many patterns of governance that exist. From there we can move from the simple defaulting to private property based models.

"far too ready, even after investigations that clearly included the express discovery of bugs in code, to ascribe possible user error to the effect of bugs, errors and defects"

Check out this 2016 piece by Chris Brooks:

"It’s called the Independent Drivers Guild—but the new organization for New York City’s estimated 35,000 Uber drivers is “independent” in name only.

"Co-founded by Uber and the Machinists union, it's not a union, it has no collective bargaining rights, and it receives financial support from Uber..."

@GuerillaOntologist @ntnsndr @Matt_Noyes cab driving is a public conveyance and regulations are there to protect drivers, passengers, and the general public. A co-op that doesn't consider the effect of its business on the larger community (and make adjustments to protect and nurture that community) is a co-op in name only. #coops

The small Coop supermarket in my street has been bought by one of the largest supermarket chains. These coops are the last resort for people like me, who are forced to live in precarity. I suspect the Coop couldn't pay the rent anymore, just like the bicycle repair shop next to it, which disappeared two years ago. It seems evident that the gentrification of the secondary cities is in progress, wiping out the infrastructures that the poorest people depend on.

4 free lighthouses... The government is asking interested groups to formally express their interest in the next 60 days, and the National Park Service will review the applications.

@carl_klitscher @strypey AFAICS many (all?) of the NZ bus systems provide real time route data that can be used by 3rd parties. See e.g. transitapp.com/ most likely in google transit format developers.google.com/transit/

Troubleshooting coreboot and EC firmware isn't for the faint of heart, but when a small number of Librem 14s wouldn't boot after being flashed, it meant a deep dive into firmware troubleshooting. Dive in with us as we go from problem to solution: puri.sm/posts/wrangling-the-ec

The Gravel Institute dropped a hot new video, about #uber, how they don't innovate, don't have a sustainable business model and are exploiting workers:

Whenever I'm bored I'm also getting tired. This is a vicious cycle 😄
