#Ai obsessed: "He called a co-wide meeting to ann:🚨from then on, we had to discuss with the AI prior to all meetings or before communicating with him -bc if we didn’t dev & discuss our ideas with the AI 1st -sign: we didn’t care about our jobs.”

@ptoothfish a friend recently tried to use his phone's macro camera and Google Lens's OCR to identify a chip in a board he couldn't read well.

Its "OCR" just made up a text pointing at another completely different chip from a completely different maker. I think *none* of the numbers and letters on it matched what you could see in the pic.

OCR, that thing we had mostly figured out in the 90s and that used to be reliable enough from the 2010s.

Why is the appeal to “traditional European values” always about xenophobia and patriarchy, and not dragging nobles off their horses and bludgeoning them with farming implements in a peasants’ revolt?

Back to pen and paper: Norway bans AI from primary schools.

For decades, Norway has been a pioneer in digital education. But now the Scandinavian country is making a U-turn.

The Norwegian government is reacting to declining test results among students and is issuing a far-reaching ban on the use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) in teaching.

The Illinois legislature recently passed House Bill 5511, a well-intentioned but deeply flawed piece of legislation that will harm young people’s ability to find information and community online. We are asking Gov. Pritzker to veto it. eff.org/deeplinks/2026/06/eff-

Observation about Germany:

Heat pumps are left wing and "woke" as far as German politics are concerned.

German politics have however not figured if installing air conditioners in public buildings and hospitals is a left-wing or right-wing talking point and therefore German politicians don't know how to approach the subject.

However, it is perfectly normal to send bespoke-built police water cannon trucks to public events for cooling them down.

As institutions scrub queer history from public view, citizen archivists are racing to save it.

Invisible Histories, QZAP and queer zine makers are preserving the records of survival, resistance and joy.

Immigrants detained at Delaney Hall say they have been denied medical care, served food with worms and forced to work for as little as $1 an hour, or for no pay at all.

@aral Calling it a "child abuse law" is such a bullshit take. It's a mass surveillance law.

just describe the image the way you would describe it to a friend on the phone

if it's just text, copy and paste the text into the image description

if it's just an image, describe what you're seeing in the image

if it's both, include both the text and the visual description

if it's a joke, describe all the components necessary for the joke to work

it's really that simple

We've moved on to mocking the Great American State Fair, but that pool's still nasty. gocomics.com/brian-mcfadden/20

The biggest datasets from outfits who are in a position to collect hard data from real dev teams, like Faros and CircleCI, show beyond any reasonable doubt that the *average* team that uses AI for code generation is outperformed in software delivery by the average team that doesn't.

True story.

It was nice to speak to China's The Paper about the climate consequences of fossil-fuel hungry software systems

Two pieces of good news for W Social:

1) I may have found the problem that has bricked their network for the past week.

2) This may very well be the LAST article I ever write about them. It's exhausting and stressful and I want to retire from this beat and go back to promoting the Fediverse.

Thank you all for your support and encouragement. And to my trusted source (a Fedi friend) who found and shared with me brilliant gems: THANK YOU! It's been a real honor collaborating with you ❤️

Any recommendations on an encrypted location-sharing app for smartphone?

I'm looking for an app appropriate for someone to track the smartphone of a child or an adult in cognitive decline (with their consent!) but that doesn't leak geolocation info to the app provider and their 3672 closest vendors.

So far I've found Paralino, which promises that it is e2e encrypted, but I haven't found an audit or anything. Has this one been audited? Recommendations for alternatives?
