I tagged #faircamp 0.13.0 for release today, here's what's new:

ALAC supported as input format / New theme option round_corners (simonrepp.com/faircamp/manual/) / RSS feed image is auto-generated, item title includes artists, item description includes release text / Description text on release pages now shows above the fold (previously easily missed) / Waveform width determination at transitional viewport widths corrected and polished / Unnecessary transcoding of intermediate track assets for already existing archive fixed / ... and a few other fixes in code and docs

Debian packages are already updated, other platforms should follow in the next days (I'll post short notes then).

This time around a huge round of applause to all the people (and there are many!) who develop and maintain the libraries that faircamp relies on under the hood, for instance @polyfloyd, whose excellent id3 crate enables faircamp to read mp3 metadata. Thank you! (*_ _)人

As someone who did her PhD on consent I just want to flag a few things in the bsky bridge discussion. One: medical style disclosure based consent (terms and conditions, EULAs etc.) is totally inappropriate for this sort of situation and has been for decades. But it serves the needs of slow-moving legal requirements and companies that like people to forget they signed up to stuff (or were coerced into doing so for social or other reasons). See liedra.net/thesis for more details. (1/n)

We had a mini spam wave on social.coop today from three "low moderation" instances that allow open registration and promote various hateful ideologies . The instances have all been suspended which should take care of the (several hundred!) bots that were spamming from each of them. If you see any more of these, please continue to report them, thank you! ~@sam, for the Community Working Group Ops Team

The authors of the dangerous Kids Online Safety Act (#KOSA) have amended it for 2024, and it remains a censorious and dangerous bill. We are asking everyone to demand that their representatives oppose it—even if they already have. eff.org/deeplinks/2024/02/dont

25 year ago, Abdullah Öcalan, a major figure in the Kurdish freedom struggle, was abducted in a US-backed international operation.

Today in Washington D.C., join us for a rally to #FreeOcalan & and End U.S. Complicity in Turkey's War on Kurds.

Because our local news outlets have gotten in the habit of only covering stuff that pops up on a listserv, stuff the cops say, and the weather, I started a sort of local news publication with me and my friends volunteering our efforts.

Indigenous affairs coverage is particularly awful in this area, so this article by Ken Wolkin gives an update on the Gayogo̱hó:nǫˀ sovereignty struggle.

An Air Canada "AI"-powered chatbot gave a customer bogus information. Then the airline said it wouldn't honor what it had told the customer, claiming the bot wasn't actually part of the airline (despite being run from its website).

A court said "give me a break" and ordered the airline to honor what the bot said.

This needs to become the rule for all such things.

i and my sweetie, both horror film lovers, are watching tonight the vampire film "only lovers left alive" for our not-Hallmark #valentines night. i highly recommend it. he's a film guy and said he heard it wasn't great. i personally heard one of the most profound nuggets of wisdom i've ever heard in this film that is about an unorthodox relationship. i'm interested to hear what he thinks as someone trained in film. I hope some of you will enjoy it too.

it's time to fork #Firefox and turn it into a cooperative-owned project.

arstechnica.com/gadgets/2024/0

cooperative membership is the element missing from FLOSS.

fuck the non-profit's faux neutrality when in truth it's just a broke doppelganger of the top-down structure of the corporatist kleptocracy.

make the project a cooperative where members --users and developers-- get to vote on the future of the project with their paid memberships and contributed labor.

Are you weary of Hallmark settler-scripted holidays? Looking for a different take on valentine's day? Please enjoy my essay, Love in the Promiscuous Style: Unsettling Settler Love. Available in both text and audio. Cheers to you today. 🥂 ☕

From the U.S. Press Freedom Tracker: Journalist Reed Dunlea was arrested while reporting on a pro-Palestinian protest in Brooklyn on Saturday.

Police threw Dunlea to the ground, damaging his equipment, and held him for 10 hours before releasing him with a charge of resisting arrest: pressfreedomtracker.us/all-inc

I was teasing this scoop last week, and only held publication of it until the company confirmed it had addressed the problem:

The Minnesota-based Internet provider U.S. Internet Corp. has a business unit called Securence, which specializes in providing filtered, secure email services to businesses, educational institutions and government agencies worldwide. But until it was notified last week, U.S. Internet was publishing more than a decade's worth of its internal email -- and that of thousands of Securence clients -- in plain text out on the Internet and just a click away for anyone with a Web browser.
