Texas Governor Abbott signals that he may (will?) defy the Supreme Court order regarding the border.
In 1830, Andrew Jackson, as president, refused to heed a Supreme Court order regarding the removal of Native Americans from Georgia.
Jackson's refusal gave us the Trail of Tears.
Jackson remained popular.
The similarity: Both defiances are deeply racist.
The difference: In 1830 only white men could vote.
Pay attention to what's happening in this case: the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals just essentially ruled that it's fully legal to jail journalists for reporting leaked information, or any information they obtain from government officials without going through "proper channels."
This is a serious issue for #journalism in #Texas, #Louisiana and #Mississppi and we should hope the Supreme Court sets things right quickly. https://www.texasobserver.org/priscilla-villarreal-journalist-la-gordiloca-fifth-circuit/ via @TexasObserver

Update on this: I'm leaning toward using LaTeX for everything and possibly exporting tutorials to html using pandoc or similar.
I've been re-doing one of my slide presentations in Beamer, and it's such a load off my shoulders feeling like I can just trust the presentation to scale text and so on reliably.
Animation is also a lot more intuitive for me in Beamer than in Powerpoint/LibreOffice.

Maybe M$ is just going through the motions to get public money through the "loan application program" since the SMRs MMRs probably won't be built.^1 An earlier article on the DOE and Bill Gates says that their "Natrium Fast Reactor" is much like a "Prism Fast Breeder" reactor for producing plutonium.^2 Maybe MegaCorporations want their own bombs now too, after rockets and satellites...

The world needs people who are better than this - strong people, more like Oliver, in fact. We need people with these oppressive values to fear the full shame of being exposed to the global society.

The successful demonizing of diversity, equity and inclusion in higher education is part of a longstanding right-wing plot to restore white supremacy as fundamental policy in America.
The NYT's Nicholas Confessore has done a superlative job of show how, and why, this happened. This is a long article and you should read it.

Extremist legislators in Tennessee and Oklahoma -- with more right-wing states on the way -- are looking to ban women from traveling out of state for abortions. They also want to imprison anyone who helps them.

Resistance is not futile. This is fascism and has to be stopped.
I'm nervous about ditching Substack, given that the income my newsletter generates makes a difference in my life. I've had hopes of continuing to grow its audience this year rather than chasing side gigs that would be a bigger strain. As a writer and a disabled organizer, discovering that I could give my work away for free and that some folks would support those efforts financially was a godsend. But I'm an antifascist, and that means my work doesn't belong on Substack. https://organizingmythoughts.org/must-reads-on-a-new-less-nazi-friendly-platform/
