Finally wrote a post that's been stewing for a while: What You Miss By Only Checking GitHub

Many researchers, entrepreneurs, open source sustainability commentators, et al. assume that GitHub activity is a reasonable proxy for FLOSS as a whole. It's not.

Goes over some examples, a marketing graphic that made my eyebrows go up, research about how unrepresentative GitHub can be, and some tools to try.

Yup - use proprietary software at your peril... lifewire.com/that-popular-andr I disagree that there's 'no such thing as a free lunch' - there're plenty of #FOSS apps for Android that aren't collecting or selling any of your data. Install via F-Droid rather than Google Play.

The excellent free open source video editing software Kdenlive made by @kde now has a Fediverse account, you can follow at:

Kdenlive is available for Linux, Mac and Windows from kdenlive.org

If you're sick of permanently renting Adobe's "creative cloud" just to access Premiere, maybe give Kdenlive a go instead?

Virginia seeks to strip transgender school students of protections - theguardian.com/education/2022 the cruelty of republicans is astonishing; I don't know how they live with themselves...

Realization: the main utility of blockchain tech is that it presents an irrefutable argument for a wealth tax. If there’s enough bored money rattling around out there to fund obviously negative-sum nonsense like this, we can as a society choose to spend that money on public education, health care and clean running water instead.

A part of a new blog article I am writing about open source and the cooperative movement.

Let me know if you have some thoughts or links relevant about the topic!

This makes me very angry: rnz.co.nz/news/national/474816 another example foreign corporations running roughshod over foreign lands and regulation and not taking responsibility for the horrible mess they've created.

I will be livid if either a single cent of taxpayer money is spent to clean this up completely - it's on Rio Tinto, as majority owner and majority profiteer, or if they get away with anything less than a complete clean up.

What would you give up to defend ?

Would any capitalists reply to that with an answer other than, "nothing"? Probably not.

Would any in the armed services be all gung-ho about defending capitalism rather than freedom (which is really what they are doing)?
