MapKnitter.org will be going offline at the end of the month due to lack of funds, which is very sad!
1000s of maps of environmental injustices people have made over the years

And also SpectralWorkbench.org too.
database of 200k+ community-contributed open source spectra.

Both will be archived on archive.org

It's really fucking hard and violent blow for environmental activism and community based open environmental investigation

On the recent news about Signal "leak"

"Was my personal data accessed or hacked?

No. Signal is designed to keep your data in your hands rather than ours. Signal does not have access to your message history, contact list, profile information, whom you’ve blocked, and other personal data."

Fox News is whipping up hate, nationally, against Minneapolis teachers, and some other right-wing source must be distributing some people's phone numbers… anyone know of an app/service that lets people have their friends help screen their calls to prevent abuse? i thought i had read about such a thing but i can only find this Android-specific, voice-assistant, local-to-your-phone feature support.google.com/assistant/a

Went out to a thing tonight connecting artists and scientists about the future of Antarctica. If all that ice melts, sea levels will be sixty metres higher. Imagine. Already change can be seen in Antarctic mosses. It’s overwhelming.

🌩️ Schools in the #USA continue to outsource highly sensitive data about students to #proprietary #software vendors to store in the "cloud", er, #Amazon #AWS.

🔓 A vendor used by some of the country's largest cities was recently breached, despite years of increasing legal policies ostensibly to protect #education data.

🤦🏻 You won't believe what happened next.

Yes, we've known about dangerous human-caused climate change from fossil fuels for over a hundred years, climate scientists have been ignored that entire time, and we're still being ignored even today

Yes, they'll have to be brave and weather the abuse from the entitled elite who think it's in the public interest (ticket prices guarantee it will not be patronised by a uniform cross-section of society, so it's effectively a publicly funded project for the benefit of the wealthy)... but all they need to do is point to the beautiful new (empty) Convention Centre, which should be dubbed the "Albatross Millstone Necklace" as that's what'll be for ratepayer for its lifetime. Why add another one?!

It also seems Apple's ad tracking rules exempt much of its own tracking behavior since it only shares the data it collects about you with itself and not third parties. At least according to this analysis: mobiledevmemo.com/att-advantag

Interesting coincidence that after Apple added App Tracking Transparency to alert iPhone users to the data 3rd party apps collected for ads, adtech had to scramble for alternatives, such as Apple's own ad biz, which grew 238% to $3.7B in 2021 theverge.com/2022/8/14/2330520

After many days of hot and dry weather, with temperatures in the 30s and feeling rather uncomfortable, today offered a respite and there were showers as well as some thunderstorms and lightning to cool things down again. The weather cleared up later in the afternoon and the day ended with this spectacular #sunset with #greys and #golds amongst the #clouds and #sky. Sort of reminiscent of #JMWTurner.

I am sick and tired of people thinking being a "businessman" in any way qualifies you to be a public servant.

Councils and governments ARE NOT BUSINESSES that should be run for profit. They are there to serve the public and provide services.

@lightweight Chomsky commented about why funding goes to fighter jets, nukes. No one knows how much they should cost so it's easy to run political machines off them. Money for local infrastructure would have a lot more knowledgeable people paying attention to the graft? The regime here loves cementing and damming rivers but can't make sidewalks nice for all the electric wheelchair old people. My guess is that it's the same dynamic. Unnecessary tunnels keep democracy at bay and the corps rich.

Looks like ol' Martin finally found his people -- the place where his particular skill-set and outlook on life are appreciated, and rewarded, instead of reviled and punished.

Privatised water firms are screwing us over & compounding #ClimateCrisis. £72bn dividends for shareholders - rest of us get water leaks, under-investment & raw sewage. If now's not time to bring water back into public hands, when is?
