Today is #AntitrustDay: Nonprofits, tech companies, and users are uniting in calling on Congress to encourage competition in tech. We can’t restructure our relationship with tech until we have antitrust laws that give us choices. Contact lawmakers now. eff.org/deeplinks/2022/04/day-

The fire is spreading.... two banks, one in Philly and another in Minneapolis, were attacked in solidarity with people defending the Atlanta Forest against those who seek to turn woodlands into a cop playground and movie studio. Both of the banks attacked are funders of the police association trying to build the dystopian facility dubbed Cop City.

Want to join the fight? Head to Atlanta May 8-15 for a week of action, or take action where you're at!

Under Biden, Private Detention Isn’t Ending—It’s Changing Form
The Biden administration promised to end private prisons. Instead, it has allowed them to be converted into immigration detention facilities.

This on top of Biden's EPA not going to regulate perchlorate in drinking water and the US Transportation Dept decision not to require safety valves on older pipelines shows is alive and well with the establishment Democrats.

Interesting problem:
It is possible to automatically cross-post from Twitter to Mastodon and vice versa.
But, the standards and culture of Twitter are very different from those of many Mastodon instances (like Social.Coop, which has a clear code of conduct). Is it better for Twitter users to cross-post on Mastodon manually, choosing which tweets will fit the culture and standards of the instance? If not, should their accounts be labeled "bot" accounts?

It's nice to see so many things in life you could make better; it sucks to know that no one will ever pay you to make things better.

Do you think there'll be a The Southman movie featuring an indigenous ancestor of Africa, South America, or Australia? ... Me neither, but it could probably be just as grand (maybe even the same story).

Speaking of hypocrisy...a bunch of conservatives at a company I used to work for are looking for a government handout to restore the pension income they lost when the company declared the pension bankrupt. Of course, these guys are blaming the government, not the company management that borrowed against the pension to elevate their bonuses or the Reagan administration that made it possible for companies to borrow against the employees' pension funds. PBGC was already a bailout.

White hypocrisy includes many liberals in the USA. Still...it's nice to see this from a mainstream media outlet.

Colleague at work trying to tell me that the chat status indicator is sacrosanct. My response was to throw a copy of Peopleware (DeMarco and Lister) at his head.

I only allow the chat app to run, because some people don't seem to know how to use email anymore. I disable notifications, because I'm supposed to be working.

It's nice to have some real investigative journalism that is willing to print some hard truths rather than a black and white narrative.

Ted Rall is willing to talk about how you should both oppose Russia's invasion of Ukraine and Ukraine's current political policies.

For most college sports fans, the post season just makes you feel bad about a team that had a good season.

“Solar & wind are now the cheapest bulk power sources in 91% of the world, and the UN’s International Energy Agency (IEA) expects renewables to generate 90% of all new power in the coming years. The energy revolution has happened. Sorry if you missed it”

"They can superinsulate your house to net zero standard in a single day whilst you’re at work, and meanwhile they’ve dropped in a very efficient heat pump core for mechanicals, and put on a super-insulated solar roof”

"Is everyone aware that in one week’s time, the government is expecting all NHS staff either (a) to pay for their own LFTs or (b) to stop self-testing & potentially come to work with Covid, infecting vulnerable patients?"

"Is everyone really OK with this?"

This seems well supported, plausible, and extraordinarily bleak. resilience.org/stories/2020-06 as humans continue to prioritise stupid things like wars of acquisition, fulfilling unsustainable personal ambitions, and generally getting more stuff. #climatecatastrophe #civilisationcollapse
