That was similar to the summary I gave our local MP. He was bemoaning the high numbers of people on Jobseeker and I pointed out that his government was firing public services and not continuing funding for various programmes that employ a lot of people.

The money is going to go into one bucket or the other. Which would he prefer? The government that spend a billion on “the dole” or the billion on “job creation”

And as Thiel demonstrated with Xero, they take the money and run.

@airshipper

The NSA has finally come around to what everyone else already knew, old file formats can’t be used as an excuse to ignore FOIA requirements, especially when another department might still have the equipment.

Now, we just have to wonder how many other valid FOIA requests they’ve rejected using this bogus rationale?

Employers should let workers opt in or out of wearing health monitoring devices, only process strictly necessary data, and delete the information within 24 hours, EFF’s @Adam_D_Schwartz told @AP. apnews.com/article/wearable-te

@cstross Agreed. I've never seen it well defined, it's always just "does it fool you personally for 15 minutes". Eliza did that to people in the 1970s. The Sims did it here:

People assume there are professional Turing testers, a man with a clipboard somewhere who's an expert at testing turings and you can phone them up to make an appointment. Meanwhile, humans see faces in clouds, put googly eyes on the roomba, ask their car out loud to start on cold mornings...

Retoot if you agree the US needs to stop arming Netanyahu to bomb Palestinian civilians.

I want to follow as many people as I can who share this belief in basic human decency and international rule of law. We must stand united for justice and on the right side of history.

Love it when people who *still* vote for the Trickle down neoliberal scam call me a "naive idealist".

Sure, hun.

It's been 40+ years but status quo is going to get better any day now.

100 people died in January, crossing the Mediterranean.

No "specialist search and rescue teams" out for them.

Not even reporting on each boat, let alone putting a name and a few sentences about each one.

We are told yacht owners are "worth" $billions.

Refugees are clearly thought to be worthless. We have to search for news of them.

They are humans in desperate circumstances, often caused by us.

Bayesian yacht disaster: How specialist search and rescue teams work underwater

If you're selling that over-expensive Peleton stationary bike you're sorry you bought, understand that the price for the buyer is actually almost $100 higher.

The company will force the buyer to fork that over as a "used equipment activation fee" -- pure corporate greed. They can get away with it, so they do it. Classic Doctorowian enshittification...

You won't find a better summary and analysis of what has happened in presidential politics during the past month than this, by @scalzi (also @jscalzi).

"I have hope that at the end of this, Harris will be president, and Trump… well, honestly, I don’t really give a shit what happens to him, I just want him gone. Prison or Venezuela! Either would work for me. Let’s hope we’re going to get there. I think we’re on our way."

Words: “President Biden and I are working to end this war such that…the suffering in Gaza ends and the Palestinian people can realize their right to dignity, security, freedom and self-determination.”

Actions: Another $20B in arms sales to Israel to continue the genocide.

Don’t piss on my head and tell me it’s raining.

I didn't cross-post about the DNC here because I am lazy and don't cross-post. Nights 1-3 were enthusiasm boosts. Night 4 was a salute to cops and imaginary centrist undecided voters.

Watching an American politician give a speech is weird for non-Americans. They go
1. inspiring stories about how hard their parents worked
2. relatable values that led them into politics
3. well-observed points about policy, energy building
4. weird bit about thanking troops for nothing in particular
5. more energy, when we work together we can do anything
6. disturbing reference to killing enemies nobody in crowd seems to notice
7. demented yelling about being the best country
8. balloons.

Sam Altman says he wants to “give people another 10 years of healthy, vigorous life.”

In the US, the rich live up to 15 years longer than the poor. Changing that requires political action that many tech billionaires oppose, not more tech solutions.
