Shades of Resistance

“In its treatment of those unexceptional humans who make the exceptional decision to risk and resist, it succeeds splendidly in illuminating the discovery that resistance is not so much a choice as a necessity.”

“It’s all here... everything you could possibly want to know about this very special band.”
100 years ago today, on Aug 25, 1923, thirty thousand Klansmen descended on Carnegie, PA to teach immigrants a “lesson.”
The community banded together, made a stand, and kicked the Klan's ass out of town.

This interview by @ntnsndr is kind of wild. You don't have 2 do much reading between the lines 2 see that this project had some big issues from the jump. And the difference between the worker's attitude (we're scared for the future) & the lawyer's attitude (we're proud of what we accomplished) demonstrates pretty well one of my big problems w/ #WorkerCoop development - the real risk is all on the workers, not the developers who come out fine no matter what.
@GuerillaOntologist She also didn't sound like a worker-owner, which makes me wonder about the dynamic of owning the holding company. What did the workers get out of that?
@sjvn sounds like a big step backwards to me - it's effectively enhanced exploitative co-dependence, that you pay extra for... or are ChromeOS users getting extra exploitation & co-dependence for 'free'?
"A huge amount has been invested into AI but consumers aren’t taking the bait. They’re treating it like those American Online startup disks in the mail.
Bingo!—straight into the trash."

It has come to my attention that some of you are very concerned about data brokers collecting your data, but are not familiar with the work of @yaelwrites and the Big-Ass Data Broker Opt Out List. Please enjoy:

Breaking news: Brazil makes homophobia punishable by prison 🗞️
In an almost unanimous vote, the Brazilian High Court has ruled today that homophobia can now be punishable with a prison sentence
This is a huge win for the LGBTQ+ community in Brazil that needs to be celebrated 🇧🇷
The 9-1 vote ruled that homophobic slurs and hate speech are a crime, similar to other forms of hate speech, such as racism.
I missed this last month: France has launched an initiative to reduce textile waste by paying people to repair their clothes instead of throwing them out.
Starting October, people will be able to claim between €6 and €25 of the cost of mending clothes and shoes. The money will come from a €154 million fund and is meant to support businesses in offering more apparel repair services.
Cool stuff! 🧵🪡

@GuerillaOntologist ... but aren't the clinically depressed more prone to suicide? (I really don't know if this is true.)
It is not like a calculator. While many use that metaphor I think it is misleading, for many reasons: https://scholar.social/@Iris/109695439816253709 (scroll up for context).
W.r.t. plagiarism: if one uses ChatGPT for text generation during idea generation, drafting, writing, one is automatically at risk of plagiarizing since the system uses existing texts without you knowing. As author it is ones responsibility to read, know and cite ones sources.
