It's interesting seeing economists finally come around to what has been obvious for ~18 months now: the majority of inflation is being caused by a handful of large companies using economic upheaval as a fig leaf for profit-seeking. It's called a “a profit-price spiral,” and it's what has beset the United States. The solution? Competition! Enforcing anti-trust law! Break up oligopolies to restore functioning capitalism. https://www.npr.org/2023/05/11/1175487806/corporate-profit-price-spiral-wage-debate https://www.nytimes.com/2023/05/30/business/economy/inflation-companies-profits-higher-prices.html
In a huge victory for civil liberties, a district court judge in New York ruled that a warrant is required for a cell phone search at the border. https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2023/05/federal-judge-makes-history-holding-border-searches-cell-phones-require-warrant
@lightweight In a world of unlimited resources...
"Give me convenience, or give me death!"
These 'bundle everything' technologies will be a good fit for systems with enough storage and memory.
Comparable to interpretive language programs (e.g., Python); if you've got the resources, it'll be quick and easy development, and fuck the people using older hardware.
Did you see headlines last week about the Surgeon General's report claiming that it said social media is dangerous for kids? I looked at the actual report and it says no such thing. https://www.techdirt.com/2023/05/30/a-deeper-look-at-the-surgeon-generals-report-on-kids-social-media-its-not-what-you-heard/

"Western intelligence agencies and Microsoft say."
I can't think of two sources I put less stock in 😆
@dynamic The "surely the science won't be used for evil" crowd? I hate to admit it, but I was on that side with GMOs. #Ignorance is no excuse!

There's a mental health crisis in science.
Studies that collectively surveyed tens of thousands of researchers worldwide suggest that scientists’ mental-health struggles are a direct result of a toxic research culture.
41% of respondents reported moderate to severe anxiety and 39% had moderate to severe depression.
Those levels are six times greater than in the general population.
As always, it's exacerbated for members of under-represented groups which when it comes to science is pretty much everyone who's not a white man from a high-income country: women, non-binary individuals, people of colour, those from sexual and gender minorities (LGBTQ+) and students on low incomes...also senior researchers and scientists in different countries.

@kyle I noticed some other slowdowns and had a couple of lockups. It does a lot of things better than Tootle, like showing polls and opening multiple attachments.
@kyle I have noticed some performance issues with Tuba, so I find it useful to have both Tootle and Tuba installed.
Hello friends, today we’re launching https://cooperative.computer !
It’s like dGaaS (De-Googling as a Service). Nextcloud files storage, contacts and calendar syncing and a Matrix account all for £3 per month.
- No ads
- No data mining
- No BS
AND THAT’S NOT ALL! Don’t like it? Change it! Cooperative.computer will eventually be its own cooperative where the members decide how it’s run.
Come talk to us on Matrix today! Operators are standing-by. https://matrix.to/#/#general:cooperative.computer
Oh and here's a solar-powered website asking "Can we make bicycles sustainable again?" Many of the factors contributing to the decreasing #sustainability of bicycle manufacture are common to computer manufacture too, but as a bike mechanic wisely observes: "The problem here is #capitalism; it’s not the bikes." https://www.lowtechmagazine.com/2023/02/can-we-make-bicycles-sustainable-again.html

I cannot get #WakeOnLAN working reliably under #Linux
It is an #accessibility issue for me, I can't reach the power button on my desktop PC's case from my wheelchair and use automations on my phone and via HomePod to turn on my computer.
Yes, I *think* ethtool fixes it, but I'd need it to run flawlessly every time the machine shuts down, or delay the shutdown until it did.
This *just works* in Windows and I don't have to think about it.
The device in question is Realtek, 10EC:8125
What I would like is a kernel/module parameter that forcibly enables WOL.
Business leaders: We can't find enough workers!
Workers: You could pay more.
Business: Nope.
Workers: Better benefits?
Business: No.
Workers: More flexible hours?
Business: No way.
Workers: Treat your current employees better to build your employer brand?
Business: Never.
Workers: Well, what's left?!
Business: Child labor!

IMPORTANT: if you use Matrix, there's currently a fake Space being created, with a bunch of rooms, using my logo and name without permission.
I asked them to stop, they removed my message and did everything they could to pose as the official Matrix space for the channel. I reported them to Matrix for impersonation, but I don't know if they'll do anything about it.
The impersonator created a space called #the-linux-experiment:matrix.org, the official one is #the-linux-experiment:mozilla.org.
Hello!
I'm a fantasy writer. Hoping to use this platform to share my work, learn, and grow on the road to self or trad publishing. Where are all the writers at?
