Starting to notice parallels between the way people talk about large language models now and the way people talked about genetically modified crops thirty years ago.

Genetic engineering sounds so innocuous when it gets framed as "humans have been modifying the genes of domesticated plants and animals for thousands of years; this is just a more sophisticated way to do it."
It looks really different when you understand how clumsy the technology has been, and how clumsily it has been deployed.
