@kawa @davidgerard 2 mathematicians were working on a problem called Navier Stokes. There's money to be won for solving it, proving or disproving. Those mathematicians were working on the problem in the fucking ChatGPT chat and gave it all their notes.

So OpenAI plagiarised their work and reached out to one mathematician to publish it jointly with (or just credit, I don't remember) that mathematician, but decline to mention the other mathematician because he works for Anthropic. The first mathematician said no. OpenAI threatened "Do you really want to ruin your career?" The mathematician replied "I am an academic" and published his statement about the events.

Fools, tools, and grifters internet-wide are claiming that ChatGPT solved the problem.

What makes me furious is that certain peeps acknowledge AI's catastrophic effects on software & web dev education, documentation, learning and express compassion with those whose livelihood is threatened – just to advice ”adapt”, “come to terms with it” and state “you get used to it”, “you'll find a new role [like cleaning up slop]”, “you cannot expect the field not to change”.

Which is in essence the same as “jump on the AI train or perish”. You're merely turning the knife in the wound.

Not AI, humans are going to cause the extinction of humans.

anti-AI policies are broadly popular, and pro-AI policies destroy communities. this article is an excellent summary of a project going from an apparent (but not actual) anti-AI stance to a pro-AI one, on the false pretenses that AI boosters were subject to harassment and witch hunts. those false pretenses are already common, and you’re going to see them a lot more soon because this is a playbook.

I grew up in the bible belt, in the south, in a recently rural farming community that was urbanizing so quickly that it was in the top ten fastest growing counties in the country for a decade.

I went to school with a bunch of self proclaimed rednecks who plastered the confederate battle flag on everything. They were fond of the phrase "heritage, not hate" which they used to mean "I want to use the symbolism of hatred, while being free from consequences."

These guys, usually, didn't know much about the history of the army who's battle flag they loved, and were, as a rule, pretty horrifically racist in ways big and small.

So when I see the rails chucklefuck talking about "Heritage is our duty" I just see the smiling face of the violent bigots that beat me and my friends for "race mixing."

And when I see him say "you're somebody now" ... I guess that's it's own post.
