The thing about "vibe coding" is that is begins from a foundation that is "coding".

A decade, two decades ago, there was already an ominous tendency among new people learning how to touch computers.

They wanted to learn how to make things that already existed. How to reproduce ideas that they already saw in the world.

And their instruction pandered to this desire. Tutorials on how to do this or that bog standard thing. "Code camps" and "bootcamps" that worked through regimented drills of cookie cutter concepts.

This was not programming as "planning a dinner party", to cite Hopper, navigating all the bespoke challenges of a unique circumstance. It was "coding" as assembling a licensed-IP Lego kit, the only object being to get the thing pictured on the box. It wasn't trying to solve interesting new problems, but rather trying to master the rote use of tools that were solutions to problems now forgotten.

@cap_ybarra @davidgerard There's a wide swath of techies that succumb to the allure of "usefulness". Crypto is easy for them to see through, because it has no fundamental use case that justifies its expense.

LLMs, on the other hand, have many apparent uses. Not only that, but techies love using tech to solve non-tech problems--often because they don't understand those problems, so assume the solution can be easily solved with tech. LLMs present themselves as the "anything solution", and it can badly do so many things (but: it does do them) that many techies just point at all the things it can do and go, "See how useful it is!"

LLMs are Dunning-Kruger wet dreams.

And what I'm learning is, so, so, SO many professional programmers are actually shitty programmers that can't even tell the difference between error-ridden slop and maintainable code.

The Associated Press is collaborating with a so-called prediction market (Kalshi) that invites corrupt gambling on its platform.

Baffling that the AP was willing to compromise its credibility as several other news organizations have done.

ICE deported a severely disabled 6 year old to Columbia after removing him from his special needs school.

Before being deported he was dragged from one detention centre to another and denied his medical devices.

He had no way to communicate or understand what was happening.
