Thanks to #AI like #ChatGPT, welcome to “zombie #newspapers”:

“Minneapolis neighborhood newspaper the Southwest Journal shuttered at the end of 2020, but its web domain continues to post fresh content under the auspices of a Delaware ‘SEO company’ whose leader lives in Serbia.”

A few legacy articles under fictitious bylines still appear but recent posts are “junk content…to manipulate search engines.”

The new owner has “no interest in the #news business.”

Usually after wasting enough time supporting various causes, you learn that humanity is stupid and self-centered, but somehow that fails to dampen your optimism that things will improve.

The End of the Warrior Met Strike and the Utter Failure of the Democratic Imagination - In These Times

Right, dinner done, bedtime imminent. Thread watch escalating to thread warning.

And let's start with some sources:
Kenneth Carroll's "Maryland Quakers and Slavery" is dated in its language, but provides a thorough timeline of the subject. Page 215, here: archive.org/details/marylandhi

We've also got this, on the history of Quaker slavers in Brookville, MD, which uses Carroll as well as several primary sources: msa.maryland.gov/brookeville/s

Reddit: "My friend is in university and taking a history class. The professor is using ChatGPT to write essays on the history topics and the students need to mark up its essays and point out where ChatGPT is wrong and correct it."

Honestly, this is great! The students learn to check sources, discover that ChatGPT is unreliable, *and* can't use it to generate essay question answers for them, all at the same time!

Lots of comments on this thread, I'm not going to be able to respond to all of them, sorry. Stuff you can do:

Tell others what is happening! Most people have no idea of the terrible consequences of unregulated development of orbit will be in the very near future.

Don't buy satellite internet! Or if you have to, tell your provider that you care about safety and dark skies

Go enjoy the beautiful night sky! And bring a friend!

Here's an uncomfortable American history fact. While folks often point out that after Jesse Owens won 4 gold medals at the 1936 Berlin Olympics, Hitler refused to shake his hand.

But what happened next? Well, after returning home, Owens & 17 other Black Olympians were denied an invite to the White House. Instead, President Roosevelt only invited white Olympians. And it wasn't until 2016 that the White House finally apologized and invited their descendants to the WH.

2016.
