The terms “free software” and “open source” stand for almost the same range of programs. However, they say deeply different things about those programs, based on different values. The free software movement campaigns for freedom for the users of computing; it is a movement for freedom and justice. By contrast, the open source idea values mainly practical advantage and does not campaign for principles. This is why we do not agree with open source, and do not use that term. - Richard Stallman

Demand #1: The $30-per-hour Minimum Wage.
Demand #2: Free national healthcare.

That savings would easily cover…

What is #FreeSoftware? Do you know its advantages?

@Gargron wow, not wanting to add to your load... but I just saw that you've opted for Discord and Github Discussion for supporting #MastoAdmins. It's really disappointing that a FOSS paragon like Mastodon has snubbed the great FOSS support options, opting for such clangingly inappropriate closed technologies for its most crucial community members. Very bad optics. I won't use those tools on principle... but I would commit my time/$ to help you switch to & maintain suitable FOSS options.
@downey @offby1 @lightweight @swansinflight@mastodon.nz Went through with it, and doesn't get why it's a problem. :-(
I suppose it's time again for my monthly posting of "Free Software Needs Free Tools" by @mako:
Folks interested in the ongoing viability of our planet... (all of you, I would hope) if you don't know about Kate Raworth's "Doughnut Economics", you need to. Here's a very good interview in which she explains it quite well. https://www.planetcritical.com/p/the-most-sustainable-economy-in-the-world She's also a big fan of FOSS and the open commons (she mentions Māori & Ubuntu)! And I'm *so* chuffed she explicitly cites Kim Stanley Robinson's "The Ministry for the Future"! Another essential read for anyone interested us having a viable future.
@UffTaTa Yes. I keep seeing "unmaintained" as a reason for not choosing FOSS software, and it is an insufficient reason.

@lightweight There's more options to choose your "noise" in the Fediverse, especially nice is the ability to choose a new hosting instance without having to change tools and (mostly) keep your followers/follows.
