Welp, that wasn't fun. Main drive on my work/home desktop spat the dummy overnight. Whole day spent rebuilding the machine. Lots more to go because it's a very involved setup (but at least I have up-to-date backups and don't have a single proprietary software license to worry about).

@lightweight I always do a RAID1 drive as well as backups. It saved me once, but doubles the hard drive budget.

@lwriemen yeah, I've done that elsewhere... but it can make things far more difficult to recover (in my experience). In this case, I've gone with comprehensive backups and it gives me an unexpected opportunity to remove kruft from my working environment ๐Ÿ˜Ž ๐Ÿ˜‚

@lightweight Like I said, I use backups as well, and I certainly wouldn't expect a carbon copy of my drive (RAID1) to fix a bad install. For a hard drive failure, the fix is usually just swapping in the carbon copy disk.

@lwriemen My home server's got RAID'd nvmes for the root partition, but not my desktop. I could do it... ๐Ÿค” Will ponder.
