I've learned many new vocabulary words from reading Ashbery over the years. Not sure if that's a plus or not, just a fact. Tonight's is "pellucid" -- adj, transmitting light; able to be seen through with clarity. As in, "Yet the froth of activity / before mealtimes crowded the pellucid element, frosting it slightly." #poetry

If I could change one thing about the way we talk about copyright, it would be to replace "protected" with "encumbered," at least in the library context. An out-of-print book from 1950 with a dead author and a defunct publisher is not "protected" by copyright; it's encumbered. 60-year-old newspaper articles, 10-year-old political ads, on and on - vast swaths of in-copyright material with no commercial life but some remaining intellectual value aren't protected by copyright. They're encumbered.

People often talk about their software "stack" when really they mean their software "house of cards".
I guess I need to get serious about finding a solution to this problem of my mail to gmail users being rejected because of my laptop VPN IP -- even though the mail is actually delivered by an upstream SMTP server that gmail has no issue with.
