big stack of hacks = working orientation sensor on the @shiftphones SHIFT6mq with #Linux mainline #linuxmobile

(video shows orientation working on a 6mq, the phone rotates :o)

this relies on some impressive hacks and ONLY works because there is no secureboot. wont work on op6!

im too tired to go into detail on this, important notes:
1. this will not work on any other sdm845 device, it only works because secureboot is off and we can therefore patch the hypervisor
2. yes seriously, the hypervisor must be patched to access sensors from #Linux
#linuxmobile

im confident that a proper solution to get sensors working properly on sdm845 devices is possible! until then, someone with a personal vendetta against proprietary firmware figured out how to disable protections and let the kernel access the GPIOs which are usually reserved

for use by the sensor core.

here's the mess of code for those interested. I'm not sure if we'll ship this as it requires flashing a modified hypervisor which is "ehh" at best...

@ariadne

IMO seems like a nice argument to post in the issue ticket that pmos opened on the topic instead of a social network

@KekunPlazas having that community featured in the documentary being called "anarchist" is an insult to anarchists.

@KekunPlazas yes, that HBO series about libertarians "ancaps" but that says that it is about anarchists.

Just finished watching the third episode of The Anarchists (2022) hbo.com/the-anarchists and man... Bakunin must be rolling in his grave at the moment...

@chpietsch

Do you realize that the argument you just posted is much more informative and contributes better to a debate on what tool to use than a simple:

"This is embarrassing"

That is a nice online rant but not really an argument.

@postmarketOS

@chpietsch

What is embarrassing about git send-email it is used by one of the largest FOSS projects out there, the linux kernel?

Also sourcehut has a webinterface to submit the patches.

@Tay0@fosstodon.org

Also as a disclaimer: I am not a member or user of project.

Simply got triggered with:

- A project makes an effort to start an online debate and present their arguments to start the debbate
- then people assuming the decision is already made for

:facepalm:

Instead of speculating that "the decision is already made" on social media
How about checking for yourself if that speculative idea of your is true or not by actually participating in the debate.

@postmarketOS

@Tay0@fosstodon.org

If they had already made up their minds do you think would have bothered to make the blogpost, the podcast with their arguments and opening the discussion and _asking_ for feedback on this idea, and mentioning in the blogpost that they can backtrack on it?

TL;DR if you actually have a contribution and arguments for this debate, make a comment on the ticket and read the arguments in the blogpost first.
instead if just making posts in a social media.

@postmarketOS

@Tay0@fosstodon.org

Are you sure you do not prefer to make your comments in the discussion ticket that pmos opened for this topic instead of having your argument lost in social media threads/walls of text. Link to the ticket is at the end of the blogpost.

@postmarketOS

We are considering to move postmarketOS to SourceHut: postmarketos.org/blog/2022/07/

(Please read the full blog post instead of just commenting based on the headline 😉)
