Whisperfish, an open-source Signal client for SailfishOS, can now be coupled as a secondary device. Which means I can finally use both my mobile and my tablet. #signal #sailfishos

I was hoping to release the new pixelfed.org a few days ago

The problem was the new server directory, it's really complex!

I wanted to make this super simple for server admins to submit & update their listings which meant I had to build a submission queue that is integrated into the Pixelfed admin dashboard and also caches (avatar, header, post) images on S3 on our side.

Anyways, it's almost ready and I can't wait 😁

Friendly #Mastodon tip of the Day 2

Filters are your best friend. If you don’t want content about Elon Musk , go to Preference > Filters and make one for "Musk".

Or #Twitter. Or anything you don't want to see.

Those posts will be hidden, and filters can be time-limited. So if you just want to filter out football chat during the world cup, you can do that.

Do you ever look at the people when you join a new #socialmedia ?

Most look at the numbers, but no, the people.

❤️The people here are FANTASTIC.

I always like to look at who is on a platform and this is what I see on #Mastodon:

1. People are creating freedom for themselves.
2. They are kind, giving, supportive and genuinely seek knowledge to grow.
3. They accept each other despite differences.

🔃Reblog this for everyone to know.

Let’s try this again. Where you at #fediverse? Boosts welcome so we can get the best sample size.

Did you know?

Bumblebees used to be called Humblebees?

Back in Darwin's day and up to the early 20th century, they were mostly referred to as Humblebees due to the fact that they hummed while flying! But the lesser used named of Bumblebee existed on the fringes.

At some point between the two World Wars, there was a shift and Bumblebee became more popular and Humblebee was consigned to history.

This entry by A.W. Stelfox in the Irish Naturalist' Journal in 1921 still used the old name.

A lot of the time I say "I got lucky" when I get a good shot, but 90% of #BirdPhotography is being in the right place in the right time. Catching this egret and reflection was a lot of that luck. #birds #WildlifePhotography

Here’s an idea: let’s call people “people” on the fediverse instead of “users” whenever we can.

Compare:

“There are 42 users on this instance.”

vs

“There are 42 people on this instance.”

Which acknowledges our humanity more?

Language matters. We don’t need to perpetuate mainstream technology’s othering/colonial framing of “us” – designers/developers/other “clever folks” – and “them” – the users (usually one step removed from “dumb user” and usually the ones who get used).

#peopleNotUsers

@aral very new user here. What’s an “instance”? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

@Anilu7 It’s the server/domain that your account is on (in your case, your instance is mas.to). And welcome to the fediverse :)

@aral thank you! It was confusing at first but @jameshjacksonjr helped me get started. Metatext is a nice client app to use - it’s clear and has nice features such as the ‘home’, ‘local’ and ‘federated’ tabs.

The media has been reporting a lot on mastodon, but often reports as though mastodon is the fediverse. I saw a well-intentioned article today that the platform started six years ago, but this erases the immense amount of work that many put into ActivityPub.

Having done standards work myself and learning that I am unable to manage the immense social pressures of coordinating divergent goals and stay happy, my hat's off to the dedicated folks who made the fediverse happen.

@cwebber 👏

Ok I see that the hashtag #introduction is trending - likely due to the musky smell emanating from a certain blue bird 🤢! So, here it is: I am female, #audiologist, #Canadian, interested in #linguistics, #dogs (wishing @bunsenbernerbmd would come over from the bird), #science, #ScienceFiction, #Apple, #fun, #mystery, #history, support #Ukraine and #IranianProtests, #IndigenousRights

For some reason, Mastodon is experiencing a great influx of new users. 🤔

Within one month our following grew from 15k to 16k.

Happy to have been here since years already. 🥰🤩🥳

I was thinking, what if as an admin of a mastodon server, you could associate a standard set of #hashtags with your server, say no more than 200 chars worth, that would be added to local toots automatically? So if your server was themed, such as infosec.exchange, you might add some standard tags like #infosec to it, and in their options, people could elect to turn that off if they wanted or even elect to turn it off on a #toot-by-toot basis.

The general concept here to start building communities around standardized hashtags. Obviously, others could use the tags, and multiple servers/communities might use overlapping or even the same tags, but it would also mean that if I was into #infosec, I could pull up a column with that tag, and all the content from the #infosec communities would show up by default.
