The Mooka Station (真岡駅, Mooka-eki) in Japan has quite a unique station building that resembles a steam locomotive. It was constructed in 1997 and even features a smokestack and a headlight.

Most locomotives are equipped with a sandbox that contains (surprise 😉) sand. The sand can be dropped on the rail in front of the driving wheels to prevent the wheels from spinning and to improve traction. This might be necessary due to weather conditions like rain and snow, or on steep grades.

Today I did a bit of trainspotting and what comes with it: checking the scedule of a specific connection, following realtime traffic visualisation and trying to be ready when the train is approaching. I'm happy with my shot 😁

In the Montparnasse derailment (22 October 1895), a train approached the station too fast and overran the buffer stop at the Gare Montparnasse terminus. It crashed through the wall and partly fell onto the Place de Rennes.

While all passengers survived, a woman in the street was killed in the incident.
