But I'm sure they'll sound great mixed into streams from Spotify lol. Capitalism wins this round. 😋
I bought the new remasters of GnR Illusions since I enjoyed the originals so much in the 1990s but had lost those copies over the decades.
And they sound terrible lol. Modern loudness compressed, mid range is boosted so high my teeth hurt, and November Rain got wrecked:
Piano is quieter, strings are louder, the thunder clap is muted to almost background atmosphere, the last bass drum kick on the signature drum roll is muted. It has no cinematic narrative punch anymore.
E.g.
“Our perceptions are a species-specific user interface, not a window on truth, and its underlying code is a sea of kludges, punctuated by islands of inadvertent brilliance. Vision does not approximate an ideal observer who recovers objective truths. It is an interface kludged together on the cheap. It tells us just enough about fitness to keep us alive in our niche long enough to raise kids.”
The Case Against #Reality by Hoffman is a wonderful read. If you’d like to learn more about biological consciousness, models of adaptation, and challenge all your preconceived notions about the #veridicality of the “visible” universe as a consciousness emerged from evolution, this #book is a thrill ride!
Currently in a section about how our brain compresses information for adapted responses.

Who remembers the times you could predict the warmth you'd hear on CD based on the three letter sequences of:
A/D : recorded
A/D : mixed
A/D : mastered
So AAD was usually earlier CDs for artists who liked warmth but still wanted to sell the new format.
ADD was modernized without losing all the advantages of analog. Balanced.
*DA is 2020s cheaply produced vinyl where they press from a CD source lol.
DDD overly marketed as the digital future and some artists like Yes (Talk) bragged about it.
@alienmelon That reminds me of my days using GoLive. 🥰
One way to read mastodon is via a command tool called "toot."
It's written in python and also offers a "TUI" (what kids today call a curses interface). Link to the project:
I mean, you can't rely on streaming anyway. Licenses come and go and I have mixtapes that aren't even a year old that feature tracks that already have expired licenses on streaming platforms.
Thank god I bought everything for offline playback at the time!
Oops, forgot to mention the iTunes store.
That's my last resort when I can't find things in proper 44khz 16-bit (CD) (or higher) uncompressed sources. I avoid AAC/MP3 as much as possible, preferring FLAC/AIFF/WAV instead.
Trying to buy and own music in 2022 (for mixtapes) is a pain in the ass anymore. Curse you streaming!
I lamented the effort required to a friend tonight...

Lights, voice, action!
For all it's advantages and faults, #Mastodon was not built to be a *new* Twitter. It was built to be *not* Twitter.
That distinction is important.
