@whitequark okay I have a question about life: given that the state of the world is bad and getting worse, what is a reasonable age at which to admit this to a child? I mean, if we talk about a very small child like a 3-year-old then I think it is fine to pretend that the world is ok, it would just be too harsh to tell the truth to someone that young. But sooner or later the child will find out anyway, we cannot keep pretending forever. When is a child old enough to hear the truth?

To fight this we would need a resurrection of the ideals from the enlightenment; freedom of thought, rational inquiry, individual liberty, freedom of expression, religious tolerance, all that stuff that was once considered the foundation of modern civilization but has now apparently been forgotten. We desperately need people to to start remembering those things and why they are important, otherwise world goes to shit.

However, recently it occurred to me that arguing in that way probably does not work on most people today, because they actually do not care about free speech either.

So I think that today's lack of understanding of the importance of privacy is just a symptom of a deeper problem: people stopped caring about human rights, including free speech, and then of course privacy is also lost.

Thinking about that famous #Snowden quote:

"Arguing that you don't care about the right to privacy because you have nothing to hide is no different than saying you don't care about free speech because you have nothing to say."

That appears as a strong argument if you care about free speech.

@marcusosterberg it's one of the aspects I despise most about all the recent "AI" stuff going on: huge companies take the work of others, mix it up and present the results as their own making, without proper references.

If an individual copies something through file sharing or similar, that is often considered immoral, illegal etc. But when a large company does things like that, then suddenly it's okay?!

Those companies get away with it because they are too big, they have way too much power.

Det behöver inte alltid handla om ideologi, kan också vara helt vanlig korruption.

Privata aktörer tjänar stora pengar på att vissa politiska beslut fattas, en del av de pengarna kan direkt eller indirekt hamna hos de politiker som fixat det hela.
