@governa From open platform to a walled prison :blobangery:

Probably too easy for advanced users to expose exactly what data robbery is going on, like to toolset that @privacyint provides:

I guess there is soon no such thing as "root" on Android, all accounts on such a device are more or less Google's little puppets.

Note that there are operating systems not based on Android at all. See what @linmob calls GNU-like systems

Leave Android (Google) behind and use one of those options instead.

These changes will probably be easily overwritten by a simple Magisk module if they haven't been already.

@Rush @eliasr @governa @privacyint @linmob Mind the ", even as root" part. I have full confidence in the hacker community to find a workaround, but it doesn't look easy this time.

@AstaMcCarthy This is a Mainline Module, it is either gonna be "install this module" or "compile with this patch", and on de-googled devices the change is utterly useless.

@eliasr @governa @privacyint @linmob Linux phones are the way to go for freedom indeed! But also a lot of development needs to be done before they can go mainstream.

@eliasr @AstaMcCarthy @governa @privacyint @linmob You make it sound easy. 😃 I'm currently using #SailfishOS, AFAIK the most fleshed-out of the “alternative” OSes, and I can tell you it's definitely not ready for serious use. I hit multiple serious bugs that would be sufficient for a warranty claim in the first day of use alone. All of them have been reported for months, but remain unfixed.

Despite the inherent issues, the best way to go is IMO #LineageOS or a similar Google-blob-free Android.

@vjon @eliasr @governa @privacyint @linmob LineageOS is not google-free, they use the google-connectivity check and pre entered googleDNS in WiFi settings, even if you don't install gapps/microG. murena.com/ (very easy, including cloud) or grapheneos.org/ (more secure, no cloud) are better choices.

@AstaMcCarthy @eliasr @governa @privacyint @linmob Thank you, I was not aware of these shortcomings. The latter was certainly not true a year or two ago, when I was still using LineageOS.

@AstaMcCarthy @vjon @eliasr @governa @privacyint @linmob
I've heard something about it at Rob Braxman on Youtube. Is there some way LineageOs don't use Google DNS or Google-connectivity check?
