Thanks to Elon’s obsession with retaining employees who contributed the most lines of code, I keep getting reminded of a classic Hindi play from 1881, Bharatendu Harishchandra’s Andher Nagari.

Andher Nagari (darkness / ignorance city) is ruled by Chaupat Raja (literally, useless king), who ordered that vegetables and sweets would both cost a taka a ser (or a penny a pound) in his kingdom.

A fat monk sees this and decides to stay in the city, stuffing himself with expensive sweets sold at a penny a pound, though his guru warns him to move on, it is dangerous to stay in a place ruled by such a king.

The final act is that when a wall collapses and kills someone’s ass, the king orders the house owner to hang. He blames the builder who built the wall. The builder blames the bricklayer, who blames the guy that poured too much water into the cement. When the water guy is brought in for hanging, he says he was distracted by the police chief who was marching his men down the road. So the police chief is sentenced to hang.

Problem is he’s skinny and thanks to the king all the ropes are tied in the same standard noose size, too large for the man’s neck. So the king orders them to hang the first fat man they see, and that is the fat monk, who is rudely shaken out of his sleep after a big lunch.

As the monk is about to hang, his guru arrives and begs the king to hang him instead, because, he claims, whoever hangs in the city on that day would be reborn as its next king.

The king believes the guru and .. sentences himself to death.

I'd love to grow my Argonaut projects to be more than just me! At the very least I'd love to rope in (and ideally have funding for) someone to handle inline text rendering & layout! But more than that, I'd like to be better set up cater to others' needs than I can as an individual.

Sometimes I wonder about founding an "Argonaut Foundation" to handle governance & funding. Though I certainly I try not to require anything near as large as Mozilla!
