Why do I continue to do open source/free software?

Everyday I’m fighting to keep open source software a reality. This is difficult. Critics and negative comments are the daily dose for any open source maintainers. Many users consume the software you produce but don’t always follow the social norm to support people contributing and creating positive externalities. Many contributions are also very time consuming and not always provide a direct improvement to a project. The most common are issues related to the infrastructure run by the users and not the developers of the project where the maintainer are supposed to help their users in any case. We often do it for keeping the project welcoming and open to any discussions. But this has a cost on the social life of the project core members.

But why am I still contributing or making open source software? Because it’s meaningful in my life to create something that helps me and potentially helping one or more users in this world. It’s just an act which is full of humanity. Sharing a creation which can be useful, it’s giving a seed to make the world a bit better and engraving the sharing act in our societies.

The goal of this message is to give some hope to the open source maintainers who feel exhausted from their projects. Even if you stop or give up, what you did is not lost. It was seed to make others thinking of sharing and contribute to an improved world.

This instance, vancity.social, will not be supporting Fedified for the following reasons:

1. Fedified is an attempt to import Blue Checks to Mastodon. As I believe Blue Checks were a major source of many cultural problems on Twitter -- including classism, elitism, harassment. Thus, I generally don't support Blue Checks.
2. It proposes to only support Mastodon. This instance is not based on Mastodon.
3. I see no proponents of Fedified mention licenses nor compatibility with the AGPL.
4. Nowhere have I seen proponents of Fedified discuss commitments to open protocols, nor explain how this would work with ActivityPub
5. Account verification already exists in the form of green checks, and it's easy to implement.
6. The majority of Twitter Blue Checks have both the resources to host their own Fediverse instances, as well as the ability to hire moderators that assist Blue Checks

But the biggest reason we won't be supporting Fedified is because it's an attempt force unpaid labour onto instance admins -- many who maintain their instances voluntarily!

On vancity.social, Fedified is not happening!

Using alt text is super important. Please continue to use it. It really makes a world of difference!!! Ich bin aus Twitterby hierher gekommen und freue mich, dass ich schon ein paar alte und auch neue Leute zum Folgen gefunden habe. Bei Twitter bin ich seit 2008 und ich habe dort Mutuals, die (noch) nicht den Weg ins Fediverse gefunden haben. Also werde ich noch beides nutzen. Die Crossposting-Funktion habe ich aber deaktiviert, damit ich "zielgruppengerecht" posten kann.
