This is so confusing. There are many free things where you are not "the product". We make many, see tromsite.com and trom.tf.
I wish people would stop saying this about google and the like. There is a simple and to the point way of describing these "free" services. They are TRADE-BASED. You have to trade something to them, in order to use their services.
In the same way that when you go to a supermarket you have to trade your currency for what you grab from it, you have to trade your attention (ads) or data to Google when you go on their platform. Currency, attention, data.
S I M P L E
We live in a TRADE-BASED society where pretty much everything is trade-based. Money is just a currency we invented, but trades go without currency as well.
We spent more than a decade trying to shed some light on this confusion.

We now have 6 servers dedicated to transcoding/transcribing our Peertube videos videos.trom.tf - thanks to @alexio who is providing 4 of them! Peertube is now a complete replacement for Youtube and I will make sure to push it a lot more in terms of use and promotion! We need to get people to use it, else without content, it won't go anywhere....

When you hear me talk about Small Tech and Big Tech or Small Web and Big Web, you might think it’s some sort of contest or something.
It’s really not.
Last year, roughly $315,000,000,000 in venture capital was invested in Big Tech.
Roughly €4,764 (€397 monthly donations to Small Technology Foundation × 12) was invested in Small Tech/Small Web.
That’s 0.000001% of venture capital alone invested in Big Tech.
Statistically, we don’t exist.
We’re a rounding error.
