Purism Differentiator Series, Part 9: Quality of Product

It is not just important to deliver products that respect people and their rights to privacy, security, and individual freedoms, it is important to make sure those products are of high quality and long lasting.

We iterate our hardware versions and new products with a care for quality and component selection that we believe will make our customers proud to use and show off.

Is it just me or is Ubuntu basically the Windows of Linux now?

There is a lot of reasons to love Mastodon and the Fediverse. One of them is the lack of algorithmic content. It does take a bit longer to get going and build up content providers, but not having a feed full of crap is all worth it!

It is time to invite more of your friends to join us. Invite to your current server or you can invite them to Vivaldi Social! Help them get going. They will thank you!

Newly added to the Trade-Free Directory:

Lutris helps you install and play video games from all eras and from most gaming systems. By leveraging and combining existing emulators, engine re-implementations and compatibility layers, it gives you a central interface to launch all your games.

The client can connect with existing services like Humble Bundle, GOG and Steam to make your game libraries easily available. Game downloads and installations are automated and can be modified through user made scripts.

When I first started calling Silicon Valley’s business model “people farming” I was told I was being hyperbolic and alarmist.

I don’t get told that much anymore.

Hey folks,

@laura is looking for a new gig after three years at Stately. She’s a designer and front-end developer who writes, gives talks, makes videos, and has been doing a fair bit of dev/design advocacy recently.

Her approach is best summed up in her book, Accessibility for Everyone (abookapart.com/products/access) and her talk on building tech that respects our rights m.youtube.com/watch?v=F5CvwioU

Big thanks to those who support our 200 for TROM donation campaign www.tromsite.com/donate/ - there are 44 people donating 5 Euros a month and we need 200 in total. We provide a lot of materials and tools - see the donation page. Your support allows us to keep these alive and relevant, and if enough support to continue to produce more.

Remember, among many things, we provide a video platform with unlimited uploads for anyone, a file hosting platform with 10GB of storage, a social network and a chat platform. Also a Linux Operating System. A lot, and for everyone. So please, consider donating 5 Euros a month if you can. It is the only amount we accept.

Thank you!

PS. If you want to help us exist until then, you can always support us with a donation or patronage at small-tech.org/fund-us. It’s amazing to me that we just need the salary of one senior engineer at a Silicon Valley startup to be sustainable and we don’t even have that. Blows my mind.

(Wouldn’t it be amazing if you could set the character limit of posts on your own instance without forking Mastodon? *smh*)

Just discovered the concept of "small tech" / "small web" boosted by @laura@laura@mastodon.laurakalbag.com and @aral

More interesting than « low tech » or « low web » fashion, powered by and for privacy, interoperability, inclusion with non-colonial nor non-commercial ideas.

Some fights and ideas picked from libre and ethical software movements, cool and mandatory nowadays :black_bloc_blob: blobnomcookiee:

So, yeah, regardless of whether we receive any funding or not I’m going to keep doing the only thing I can, which is to keep working on making the Small Web exist (ar.al/2020/08/07/what-is-the-s).

And the goal is that once we get to the point where we (and anyone else who wants to) can host Small Web places, that will hopefully make us sustainable (because clearly we can’t depend on public funding).

But it sure as hell would be nicer if we didn’t have to keep living a precarious existence until then.

Folks: where’s the alternative to the trillion-dollar surveillance capitalists you’re working on? Why isn’t it ready yet?

Also folks: Here’s your €457/mo war chest… don’t spend it all in one place now!

(I can’t express how grateful I am to our patrons over the years but how the fuck do we compete when we live in a world where some random techbro raises $2.6M to build a people farming social network where you can only say “Yo!“ while we struggle to pay the rent?)

If you haven't donated or became a patron to Small Technology Foundation. You should they are building a better web for individuals.

@aral @laura
I think this would make a great addition to the development of the small web.

Mozilla is a for-profit not-for-profit. And that’s all you need to know to explain everything that doesn’t seem to make sense about the chasm between what they say and what they do.

#mozilla #hypocritical #bullshit

The Small Web is the personal web. It’s the peer-to-peer web.

There’s no concept of ‘users’ on the Small Web. You own and control your own place on it. With your place, you can be public should you so desire and follow each other’s activity but you can also be private – actually private, i.e., communicate via end-to-end encrypted messages.

It’s very early days and it’s not ready for use yet but you can find out more and follow along:

If it wasn't for Aral promoting superior content on Mastodon. I don't think i would have switch over fully from X or Twitter. Whatever it be called these days.

What would be even more interesting for @aral to write a book.
About developing or ethics behind the small web vs the big web.
