An exchange here on Mastodon last month made me think about the fact that so many of us (including me) are walking around with stories inside our heads from the early days of networking. Some of it is early #InternetHistory ... some of it is from times before the #Internet.
I wrote a post about that today:
https://www.danyork.com/2023/01/capturing-memories-of-the-internets-history-and-pre-history.html
Some of it may be things we don't think are important.
I'm going to try to write down some of my memories.
What about you?
Haha!

@pschiller
Why not make a social.apple.com Fediverse instance for Apple employees and marketing purposes?
@mariusz Absolutely. I hate it when I see designers implement things like hamburger buttons in a mobile website because "everyone else is doing it" and then see the traffic drop 30%.
The difference between a good designer and a great designer is in their ability to not only solve problems but also to articulate how their design solves it. In fact, I would go so far as to say that a designer’s ability to be thoughtful about a problem and articulate any solution is more important than their ability to design the perfect solution every time.

Our email addresses & cell phone numbers are arguably better global identifiers than gov't issued IDs. Marketers know this & use these handles to track us. @simplelogin CEO Son NK will show us how to throw them off our trail using aliases. #privacy

I emailed #IFTTT about adding #Fediverse apps like #Mastodon, #Pixelfed, #Misskey & #WriteFreely & they really liked the idea! They wanted to talk to the platform creators & will try to reach out to them about this (they are also asking fans of the platforms to reach out as well).

Having #ActivityPub apps on IFTTT could enable some interesting interactions, especially is someone lives in a smart home!
@ev Do you mean the Fediverse or just Mastodon? The Fediverse should continue to grow as a massive open network with a huge ecosystem of server types, client apps, and add-on services; just like email and the internet itself.
How many times do I have to delete the "Microsoft Edge" icon from the desktop? Every day?! #Windows11 #MicrosoftEdge #Windows
@rockerman@mastodon.uy Try https://www.freenom.com/. Sometimes they have free ones, but it might take some searching.
@ylitvinenko I sometimes tape one to the inside of the case. :)
Don't trust any service on the internet you cannot host yourself, if needed. I am a very happy customer of https://masto.host for my instance, I am definitely not looking forward to run it on my own machine, but it makes me feel good to know I can, should the need arise.
@rockerman@mastodon.uy @delta If I understand the question correctly, I got a Black Friday VPS deal from RackNerd.com for $11 per year.
@tiffanycli Of course I wish the USA could be much better about that, but given history, I'm not sure I'd say we deserve it. :-/
@soller Wow! That's exactly the monitor I had with my Pentium II 256Mb RAM Windows NT 4 machine! Nice!
@jhpot Well, it probably won't be any time soon. Keeping the dumb TV until it breaks. :)
