@BryceWrayTX@fosstodon.org @kwf Yeah, I'm pretty sure an instance like that would get banned by everyone in less than an hour, right?
congrats to @conservancy for doing the right thing and standing up a dedicated instance for their organization
@alexstandiford @chris Agree!! The plug-in is a start, but it needs more work and the ability to follow/respond to others instead of just broadcasting WP posts & accepting replies on the Fedi. https://wordpress.org/plugins/activitypub/
@thunderbird Here's some tips about mobile app design. If you're holding a phone, normal humans can't reach buttons at the top of the screen with their thumb without using a 2nd hand. It's better to put the buttons where fingers can reach them so that buttons are easier to use. https://bookofadamz.com/smartphone-graphic-user-interface-design-tips/ #UX #Design
@feinzer @benpate @blaine Yeah, the only messaging protocols that aren't designed to screw people over are Matrix, XMPP, Briar, Bitmessage, IRC, and Email. Mastodon already has email support for server-user private messages. We COULD use that for user-user private messages by putting a form on profiles that only appears for non-blocked visitors. Could even use a listserv for better privacy like Craigslist, and/or integrate a conversation reader. It would work independent of instance platform.
@blaine @astro We do have another federated form of messaging that's already built into Mastodon and every electronic device on the internet. It's called email. Just add autocrypt, TLS & DANE for full encryption, right? No need to reinvent email yet again; just upgrade it a little more. Throw a form into the user profile, done! It's possible to put a chat style UI on it, too.
@benpate @blaine @signalapp It does require Signal's centralized servers, they refuse to federate so they can maintain control, they require phone numbers that can be used for relationship mapping, and they're no longer fully open source. Bad idea to put personal communications in the hands of a single entity.
@jperlow Can you believe Gopher is still around though? Browsing through that with Lynx in a command line is kind of fun!
@shanselman I only have notifications on for work email, personal (no spam friend/family only) email, and phone calls. It's beautiful!
One of the things that's made it easy to find communities whose discussion I want to see is the linear feed. This is a stark contrast to new social apps I've tried, e.g., Clubhouse, where my feed is dominated by high engagement stuff I don't want.
I understand why companies push that stuff; looking at Twitter's experiments, you get more growth/$ when you switch users who've chosen linear timeline back to ranked timeline.
Fundamentally, this is why most apps don't even offer linear timeline.
@Raspberry_Pi@raspberrypi.social @petestevens @beasts THAT'S the article I've been looking for y'all to make. NICE!!
I see that #Hive is trending so I tried it and so far it's quite unfinished and suspicious.
- There's no web version (a big no for me)
- The app forbids to use or post media unless you give access to ALL your media on iOS. This is a HUGE red flag to me.
(on iOS, when an app asks for a media, you can give it only a selection of media to avoid hack/download of all your media library (you now, privacy etc). Hive doesn't accept that and asks for all access)
Also no 2FA, no DPO (so not GDPR compliant for privacy)...
Just for you to know.
Did you know that #Mastodon supports #RSS feeds?
That means you can follow your favorite people and topics right inside of Thunderbird!
→ Just add ".rss" to the URL ←
For example, our Mastodon URL "https://mastodon.online/@thunderbird"
becomes
"https://mastodon.online/@thunderbird.rss"
What about #hashtags? YEP!
Let's look at #OpenSource. From our instance, it is: "https://mastodon.online/tags/opensource"
So, we just append .rss and it works!
REALLY useful if you don't want to miss a thing!
@atomicpoet Agree. Do you know about FirstNet in the USA? It's more of just a network, but I kept saying they should have some kind of comms server in the command center instead of sending everything to a satellite. https://pocketnow.com/this-firstnet-tech-might-save-your-life-soon/
@xabean @signalapp Or make an instance on the Signal domain instead of using someone else's.
@vector1dev@mstdn.starnix.network Exactly! Or we could use email with upgraded encryption like TLS/DANE & autocrypt, right? https://bookofadamz.com/the-smartest-messaging-method-is-not-a-segregated-mess-of-whatsapp-signal-telegram-sms-slack-teams-facebook-instagram-wechat-etc/
