Fantastic idea. Signal is open source, but doesn’t it require Signal’s centralized servers? What would it take to embed into Mastodon?
@benpate @blaine @signalapp It does require Signal's centralized servers, they refuse to federate so they can maintain control, they require phone numbers that can be used for relationship mapping, and they're no longer fully open source. Bad idea to put personal communications in the hands of a single entity.
@blaine @adam @benpate @signalapp Maybe matrix implementation? Or XMPP. Both are federated and you could bundle a small server inside Mastodon, whateverroma and whateverkey
@feinzer @benpate @blaine Yeah, the only messaging protocols that aren't designed to screw people over are Matrix, XMPP, Briar, Bitmessage, IRC, and Email. Mastodon already has email support for server-user private messages. We COULD use that for user-user private messages by putting a form on profiles that only appears for non-blocked visitors. Could even use a listserv for better privacy like Craigslist, and/or integrate a conversation reader. It would work independent of instance platform.
