@da@mastodon.technology @jeremiahlee Right about privacy issues limiting email exports. BUT, they could still use some API connectivity to allow some social graph portability. (Ideally a full protocol like AP, but that’s wishful thinking.) Or at least cross-post. Friendica at one point used an API to have a Facebook Connector; but FB made it impossibly unworkable to implement github.com/friendica/friendica

I wrote that connector originally.... it used to work great and gateway between the "free web" and Google and Twitter and Facebook (and email and anything else we could federate with). What a nightmare it became. And then other free web projects starting building walls to keep people on our project from interacting with "their members".

Federating and even migrating online communities is real touchy because you're playing with human tribal instincts and we're incredibly tribal creatures. If I had realised this in 2010 I would have probably done something else with my life. To this date, most successful migrations have been entire minority communities who were forced off one of the larger services by censorship or edict.

Anyway, that's all ancient history. My advice is to just forget about Facebook and all your so-called friends on that service. Just leave. You'll be much happier once you break the dopamine addiction. We've been through this many times before. Two or three friends will find ways to stay in touch. Most won't care or even notice you're gone.
