I can totally see where this is coming from, but don't be so pessimistic — people fall for populism everywhere, but in Russia — way more than in countries with mature democracies. People here fall easily for the promise of "benevolent dictatorship" we simply never had democratic traditions — in the US there would be long-term consequences, e.g. Supreme Court appointee of Trump won't magically disappear when he leaves the office…

But otherwise mature democratic institutions aren't so easy to dismantle given limited time — losing presidential election is no reason to despair and quit, I have faith in American society — so should you!
