My old HP laptop allows remapping most LEDs to most other things: such as internal storage or network activity, audio input/output mute and so on — making extra LEDs extremely useful! My old MacBook Pro isn't as flexible in this regard, I suppose it depends on how well the embedded controller is supported by the Linux kernel.
Reading this and thinking a little more, letting people choose what their lights show seems the way. You may want to know the internet connection and microphone, whereas another may want a Caps lock and num lock.

And I use the CapsLock LED to indicate the alternative layout — which is quite useful when you have to use a non-Latin one often. I don't have to use any software indicators for that.
