You literally asked for this
@feld this is basically me, I don't want people to come here anymore, I wish a bunch of people would leave forever, ideally via death
@sun It's a bit of an exaggeration to compare fedi to email because at least when you're emailing your friends/family you don't have random people replying with nonsense.

In some ways federated social media is the worst of both worlds if your intention is to have a fruitful conversation *IN PUBLIC*.

I think this is the biggest mistake we have made in internet culture. We thought we were being open and inclusive but instead we are inviting buzzkills to ruin the vibe and shutdown discussion.

I don't think it's possible to have many types of conversations in public on a permissionless platform because you will have to deal with trolls and amateurs who invade the space and disrupt with nonsense. Sometimes a barrier to entry whether it be skill or invitation by an existing member is crucial to making it work

If it's about friends and family-only (same as it's with e-mail), fire up an instance just for them, turn off the federation, close the registration and make the timelines non-public — problem solved.
If you keep the federation on — you're like inviting outside people yourself, and yes — some of those might be idiots 🤷
