"What’s concerning is that students say they feel much less engaged in school than they did just last year, compared to Gallup’s 2023 Gen Z survey."

The survey indicates a very large (up to 10%, depending on the metric used) increase in student disengagement in the U.S. between 2023 and 2024. That's a huge change, and very recent.

Pat answers about problems with education that go back decades or short term changes due to lockdowns will not explain this.

@dynamic My interpretation is that this is the complete and utter refusal to pay teachers coming home to roost. No way to verify that.

@ikanreed

I think you may be onto something there. Gradual ratcheting up of responsibilities for teachers (with no corresponding increase in compensation) can't have helped either.

@dynamic @ikanreed Add onto that the remote online aspect that has been poorly rolled out in a hurry, plus all the pre-packaged digital learning. Pressures to teach to standardized testing. In red states in the USA, there's also laws against talking about real life.

@lwriemen @ikanreed

What a horrifying yet plausible set of thoughts.

I wonder how much what the landscape for remote learning technology has changed for high school students over the past year.

Would also be interesting if there were data on engagement levels by state.
