Possibly unpopular opinion here…but all these complaints about how the influx of new users is impacting Mastodon culture, it just dawned on me that it’s akin to how people speak about immigrants (i.e. “THEY came here, they should assimilate to OUR way of doing things, and adapt our culture”)
As an immigrant myself (in real life) I know first hand the impacts of this inflexible way of thinking. It’s a nuanced topic, but just something for the OG Mastodon inhabitants to consider.

@renita I read your thought. I am not sure what I think. But firstly, if you will so, you have the right to feel so and it is true. I also believe it can be correct observation and opinion and the analogy to immigrants. I think one reason for complain and misunderstandings might be Mastodon is many instances, and each of them can differ in code of conduct, praxis etc that also those complaining are not aware of. Also set of tools differ between instances. (OG means?)

@hehemrin Thank you for sharing this perspective, and I think that’s definitely a valid contributor to some of the opinions I’ve been seeing.

“OG” is a colloquial term for “original”. (Back in the day it originated from the term “original gangster”…but that’s not to be taken literally in current context, as it’s culturally just used to mean “old school”)

@renita I reread after publish my text was somewhat messy in the beginning. Should read before toot. Anyway, I think it was readable. Thanks for OG-explanation. Wishing you a happy, respected and inclusive Mastodon-life!

@hehemrin Yes, your text was quite readable. Thank you for the civil discourse, and well wishes 🙂
