Yes. We synchronized our blocklist to mastodon.social, and it has bird.makeup blocked.

I understand that, as I feel it's wrong to duplicate the content of an author without their consent. If an author wanted that, they should/could set up a cross-poster themselves.

@jorijn @bradr3d @vincent

I assumed the reason an instance would block this is that it is a strain on server resources...

Twitter provides an embed feature that can be used to embed any public tweet on a web page. I also see content duplicated as screenshots all the time. I have to assume that this expectation is included in the terms of service that every Twitter user agrees to. Not sure how this usage is different.

@tonymasiello @jorijn @bradr3d please respect admins’ decisions about this. They are also trusted by their communities to curate the fediverse. If you are not happy about how your server handle things, you can always move servers ✌️

@vincent @jorijn @bradr3d

Sorry I was only trying to understand the issue better make conversation. No disrespect intended! ☮️

I absolutely agree with what you mention about the trust of the community in admins and the ability for anyone to change servers.

Thank you!

@tonymasiello @vincent @bradr3d

The strain isn't much. It's just that it's a kind of strange addition to the Fediverse. I get its appeal, and as a user, I could see the benefit.

But, as an admin, I get many reports of impersonations or even flat out bad content. There's (as of now) no real way to moderate these bridges, as far as I know.

@jorijn As a user, I enjoy bird.makeup and I am very grateful to be on an instance that didn't outsource choices about which instances to suspend.

I would very much like a way to keep my Twitter account protected but still send tweets to bird.makeup.

Redirection to my Mastodon account like @BirdsiteLIVE added would be great too.

@vincent

As an admin, I would absolutely put bird.makeup in the limited list instead of suspended.

@tcely @BirdsiteLIVE @vincent

Alright. You make a valid point. I've updated the setting to limit, let's see how it goes.

@jorijn Thanks! I hope more admins take this approach too. Being able to keep up with public accounts from Twitter without an account there is tremendously useful.

If you discover a downside, I would also like to learn about that. Let us know, please.

@vincent @tonymasiello @jorijn @bradr3d I agree with this. However, it’s important to ensure that admins are transparent about the rules in place. I’ve definitely seen servers that list rules, then make decisions that are out of scope of those rules. It’s critical to set the rules publicly, and enforce the stated rules. Going out of scope of those stated rules is unfair to the members of your community.

@fishcharlie @vincent @tonymasiello @bradr3d

I have since then updated the block on this instance to be limited, instead of suspended. This allows people to explicitly follow accounts there, but they won't show up to the ones that don't.

@jorijn @vincent @tonymasiello @bradr3d Oh nice! To be clear, wasn’t specifically referring to you. More just a general statement about federation.

I think in general tho. Tweets being embedded on a website isn’t THAT much different than bird.makeup. (Lots of subtleties I’m leaving out here).

It’s a tough balance. I hope admins in general will continue to strive to make transparent decisions that follow the rules they outline publicly.
