“Backdoors will leave America less safe...If you want the strongest security in America you have to be for strong encryption and no backdoors!”

Thanks for defending strong encryption at #DEFCON27 and on Capitol Hill, Sen. @RonWyden. t.co/FkF65wAK68

Tobacco in the 1990s
Climate change in the 2000s and 2010s
Gun control today

Mitch McConnell supports his donors, despite evidence that they cause harm. He'll even help them sow uncertainty in the public eye to the detriment of the public. The US needs campaign finance reform so our representatives are incentivised to look out for people over corporations.

The house passed two bills that would improve background checks; which doesn't take away anyones guns AND a position that Trump once supported. McConnell won't bring the bills to vote. Today Trump said "There's no appetite in congress for gun control." There's support for improvements among the people, there's support in the House, it seems like the lack of appetite is with NRA donation recipients...

The #PineTab is a $79 Linux tablet
by Pine64, the same manufacturer of the #PinePhone and PineBook low-cost Linux devices.

This low-power Linux machine, however, has some hidden perks: for example, via an internal m.2 slot it supports SATA and LTE expansions in a somewhat modular way. And now it boots postmarketOS with several UIs, such as KDE #PlasmaMobile and Purism's "Phosh".

You can read more about it in our latest post: tuxphones.com/pine64-pinetab-p

Time for the August Blog Update -- London Meetup, PineTab News, SOEdge And More!

Quite a bit of news covering the spectrum of new and upcoming products!

Was it the norm in 1600s Spanish lit to have and respect strong women? From what I can tell it wasn't in the Arthurian Legends, but Miguel de Cervantes' satire Don Quixote contains an amazing scene. Chapter 14, after a couple scenes building her up as both a beauty and a cruel woman, Marcela finally takes the stage. She denounces Chrysostom's advances and entitlement of her affection. Our hero stands with her cause, but his support is wholly unnecessary.

Been listening to Myths and Legends. @mythsandlegends@twitter.com goes into legends beyond the just well known (e.g. Greco/Roman or Arthurian). His critiques seem apt, but where it really seems to shine is the attempt to fill gaps in motivation.

I have never heard of Koschei the Deathless and he explains that he takes some liberties in trying to figure out the motives of this sorcerer. The result is haunting and amazing.

Not having to extract the zip archive to listen is another win. Just point at the archive and it creates a playlist with the files as tracks.

Yesterday a friend and I were musing about reading an directly into . Turns out it was already implemented. I have only used VLC occassionally, but I am starting to see why it has such a vocal and staunch following.

Apparently I was the first in my friend group to discover that has so I'm going to share that here. Right now if you scroll to the bottom of the search screen on the android app, there's a word category. There are playlists with books. Hopefully they soon get treated like podcasts, with the ability to modify playback speed.

You're welcome fediverse ^_^

I love guest checkout. Not having to create a password and store a card number with another profile is great. I guess will never use it because then they have less ability to profile customers.

@eff @mozilla are there resources or social pushes for guest checkouts with merchants?

IRL Podacast S04E02 really struck me from a different angle: "Why do I need this password for Spotify other than to protect Spotify?"

Assuming your account isn't tied to a credit card this seems like a good question. Maybe with a card that has limited spending in a time window and single merchant use (e.g. privacy.com) even that wouldn't matter...

Tune into Monday at 11 for their take away on . seems like interest is in it is going main stream. Earlier this week there was news that one of the dakotas is expanding hemp growing for CBD. And a regional gas station chain, Kwik Trip, has started selling CBD. I've even heard some coworkers talking about it.

Earlier this week was playing a segment talking about newly elected Prime Minister Borris Johnson. Upon some reflection his rise to power seems to almost reflect Frank Underwood from House of Cards (US).

PREORDERS LIVE! #pinebookpro Find the link here :) pine64.org

Pinebook Pro pre-orders begin in minutes! I've loved the idea of a lower power, long battery life laptop for over a decade (remember One Laptop Per Child?) While the original pinebook wasn't quite a replacement for my netbook, I hope the pro will be. The Pinebook Pro can run android or full-on Linux. Thanks @PINE64 and @kde@mastodon.technology for an awesome rig and desktop!
