Was it the norm in 1600s Spanish lit to have and respect strong women? From what I can tell it wasn't in the Arthurian Legends, but Miguel de Cervantes' satire Don Quixote contains an amazing scene. Chapter 14, after a couple scenes building her up as both a beauty and a cruel woman, Marcela finally takes the stage. She denounces Chrysostom's advances and entitlement of her affection. Our hero stands with her cause, but his support is wholly unnecessary.
