I, an engineer with a love for #math, grew up in a rural river valley that had two radio stations, both family friendly top 100s. So I didn't have a lot of exposure to #rap. My gf makes a rap playlist on #Spotify for me. She happened to be around when I discovered new content on it, Roses by Outkast, and she was surprised when I named the song.

@anahata@mastodon.social it's strange to see Herbert compared to Tolkien. I devoured #Dune and loved it. I sloughed through #LotR and hated it.

I get what you're saying about the Irulan passages, although I don't think any of them embedded themselves into my consciousness like Gurney Haleck's "if wishes were fishes we'd all cast nets."

I wonder why I read 2.5 LotR books and only 1 Dune. I may have to go rectify this great injustice I visit upon myself!

Just went trolling the Dune hashtag and there's a #Dune (2020) show coming out? I don't know if I've seen the other adaptations. But won't this be the 4th attempt to cover the same ground?

I read #Dune (just the first book) a long time ago yet it left such an impression. I can't put my finger on why I liked it so much, but Frank Herbert had some sort of arcane mastery. So many memetic things from a single source: maud'dib, Bene Gesserit witch, the litany against fear, and the careful, patient, and intentional ecological work of Kynes with the Fremen.

After learning about #emotionalcontagion, from The Happiness Lab, I decided to try to be a little less pessimistic and more jovial version of me at work today. N=1, even if I didn't notice it reflected by people around me I had a better than normal day. I managed to be pleasant when a new issue cropped up an hour after I should have been gone for the day. Come to think of it, maybe staying late should count _against_ the experiment! 😄
