I think the debate rests fundamentally on what your view of humanity is. Those against free speech I suspect think that most people are dumb and cannot be trusted to think for themselves. Those who tend to favour free speech generally think more favourably of people and their ability to reason for themselves. The intellectual elites in both the former Soviet Union and the United States both had this contempt for ordinary people in common. I find that very interesting.

@megan @alexa Isolation actually *drives* radicalization, though. Cults and radical ideologies and abusive relationships have a few things in common, but what you are suggesting is one of them: they are more stable, they are more extreme, and they have lower attrition rates when they can limit personal relationships with people outside the bubble. Often these groups have to expend energy to maintain the isolation; you're doing their work for them if you ensure that they are isolated.
@coolboymew @megan @alexa A perfectly sane individual who just wants to fucking kill every person who says mean things on the internet. Except himself of course, the killer is always the exception in these cases.

q: why are the jokes on laffy taffy so bad

a: they're always a bit of a stretch

@terryenglish It's a terrifying trend, and one we need to reverse. Encryption is essential to privacy, and privacy is essential to liberty. From what I understand, you cannot have free speech in the online era without encryption. We need to go forward not backward.

Yeah we probably shouldn't let a hostile foreign power have any degree of control over critical communication infrastructure. We can and should build and design in country. Canadian jobs for Canadians.
